65' FB 289 4bbl auto
Reman 70' Disc brakes on front , rebuilt stock drums on back
Reman 70' Booster, master, and proportioning valve
MS pedal reposition kit .Everything replaced from the booster to rear brake hdw kits
three or four quarts of brake fluid, pedal pump brake bleed, vacuum brake bleed, gravity brake bleed.
Pedal is good and firm when not running. Start the car pedal drops 3 to 4 inches, stops about 1" from the floor with fair brake response.
Someone help please

Thought there was some sort of trickery i was going to learn.
But yes all of the normal, common brain farts have been checked and re checked.
Im thinking (after some advice) brake pedal adjust rod may be the culprit. I will soon find out.

What model vehicle is booster and master cylinder originally for?
What is the master cylinder bore diameter?
Was the master cylinder for power or manual application?
Worst case scenario, just send me your FB!
Since you have” too many projects”. 😁

Booster, master, and valve are new reman for 70' mustang w/ disc
Bore size i'm assuming is 1"
Funny you say just send it to ya. I told my neighbor he could have a running driving FB, the problem is you cant stop....
FYI: Car was orginal KH disc brake car. At some point it was converted to granda brakes.
I have done the MS pedal repostion and replaced the stock small booster and master cyclinder with the 70' mustang setup. now im here with issues.

Downshift, neutral, and parking brake.😁
I have the foxbody booster that came with the MS pedal assembly with a 2001 v6 Mustang master cylinder.
I have used this combo with Granada brakes/proportioning valve/stock rear drums and no issues.
My car originally had 4 wheel power drum brakes.
So I didn’t notice a height change in pedal.
I did notice improved stopping power...and a little bit more sensitive compared to original setup.

Do you have picture of front brake setup?

ill take some today and post later.
Thanks

How did you use a 70 booster on a 65. My kit is not designed for that.
Did you adjust the rear brakes as tight as they can be? You either have air in the system, calipers on wrong side, or rear brakes not adjusted, OR something terribly amiss with that 70 booster installation. Do you have the 70 power brake pedal or one from a manual brake 70? Need pics of that installation.

Well i have a conundrum!
After zooming on the tag on the booster, it is a A-1 reman 504005 which fits 82' to 86' V6 mustangs
Offline
So the information i provided is wrong. I guess i received the wrong booster and master when i order from the local parts house.
Now that ive discovered this, ill assume this is my issue.

If the booster is from 82-86, it should have the same fitment as the foxbody booster used in my kit. I cannot see the relocated pedal pin on my phone’s screen. It should be a little less than 1” center-to-center Lower than the old pin.
Be sure the booster output shaft is adjusted out so it almost touches the MC piston. 0.010” is about right amount of clearance. Be sure your decimal is in the right place.
If your pic of the caliper bleeder is taken with UP facing up on your camera, bleeder points rearward, then it is correct.
Leads me to rear brakes. If they are not adjusted out close to the drums, you will have excessive travel.
Offline
You may want to add a 10 pound residual pressure valve to the rear brake line. Dennis
Offline
Dennis,
What will that do?
Im not familiar with it
Offline
It will keep fluid pressure on the rear wheel cylinders so it requires less pedal travel to engage braking.

Are the rear brakes adjusted out to the drums?
Offline
Yes sir
There is a light drag when turning by hand

Let me add that the pedal only travels 1 to 2 inches when not running and is setting where it should.
Only when vacuum (Engine running)is applied to the booster does the pedal travel 4 to 5 inches to about a 1" off the floor.
Offline
That much travel is definitely Indicative of a problem. Will the pedal return to static position fully before hitting the rubber stop? I am wondering if the pedal is not allowing the mc to fully relax.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
