It’s HOT out there!

Starting my A/C overhaul project. This is the second time since purchasing the car. The first time was over 30 years ago. It hasn’t gotten any funner yet. I replaced the heater core back then. But this is the third time it’s been into. The first guy butchered the firewall replacing the evaporator.

Re: It’s HOT out there!

Normally we have really low humidity here in Bako, and rarely above 20%. A couple of days ago we were treated to some nice Southern weather. We hit 105°, then this happened:

Re: It’s HOT out there!

In the Niagara are where I live we have finally broken a record 4 months heat and drought.
Having lived in this are all my life I can't remember ever having such a stretch of unbearable weather.
Geographicaly being situated between two of the Great Lakes, Erie and Ontario, our temps are usually moderated by them, but this year the weather patterns have been crazy. For some reason any passing rain storms seem to part like the Red Sea and go North and South of us. Even my sons well on a Century farm has gone dry, the first time any of the old timers can remember.
To day and for the next week or so we are expecting mid to high seventies but still no precip.

We got some of that here in Norcal yesterday too!  106 today with more to come over the next few days.  Rolling power outages, too, thru Thursday.  I think I will stay indoors.  More fires started overnight too.

Re: It’s HOT out there!

Yes, it's been dry and blistering here in North Tx as well. We got a bit of cooler weather last night, of course it was accompanied by 60MPH winds, t-storms, and hail...

When I did my mini renovation of my garage I put in a mini-split. Best-decision-ever!

Re: It’s HOT out there!

Yuuuup, If you look at the pics, the garage is closed.. The new Mini-Split is working full blast over here. No way I'm doing this project in this Texas heat and humidity.

Re: It’s HOT out there!

That looks like a fun project Doug!! What other upgrades you going to do with it all torn apart?

I have discovered there is a benefit to having an attached garage....blocking the door open from the house let’s me direct the AC into the garage. Sure makes things more bearable.

Re: It’s HOT out there!

I agree about the attached garage John, especially in the mid of winter. I can walk out of my family room straight into the shop/garage.

I just finished putting the clutch pedal back in for the T5. Then the AC went out. I had earlier installed a cruise control, a "modern" radio, and a intermittent wiper switch. While it's apart I"ll do a lot of clean up (There's a lot of dirt back there) and rearranging the wiring mess. I can't think of any more mods that I might want. (Till after it's put back together.)

I have an attached garage an thought about cutting an extra hole on the AC unit for the garage but I thought the garage fumes and smell would get into the house so I bought the mini-split.

Good call on the mini-split. Besides the fumes you also have to be mindful that the current AC might not be sized appropriately to add the square footage of the garage and could impact the rest of the house. In my case there'd be a very angry wife coming after me

Re: It’s HOT out there!

Sounds like a plan. Take some “admiration time” while you’re sitting in the car to stare at your handy work to see if a new idea pops up💡

I’ve had some of those same thoughts about AC sizing and fumes in the house when we considered opening a wall to the garage to create a tool room / work area. We decided against it as well. Maybe next year I can get one of the mini splits.

Re: It’s HOT out there!

The amount of dirt or dust inside the A/C housing is incredible. It's been gathering for at least 38 years. Probably more, it wasn't like me to clean things back in the day. It was just giterdone.

Re: It’s HOT out there!

I dont know what a mini split is and would like too. As far as most garages go, they are not insulated. Mine was before i raised the roof with 24" of blow in, and I have a insulated garage door. Now the new vaulted roof has R21 in the roof rafters and all the wall between the house are fully insulated. I kept the old attic power vent so that I can pull any unwanted heat when ever. Like when you come home from a drive.  i installed a 2,4,6,8 hr timer on it also bypassing the thermal switch. I installed a 5K AC above my work bench about 12 yrs ago and if it was really hot out I just turned it on while I was out there working, I found that it could keep the whole room cooler if I didnt open the big door. I think with the 12-6 ceiling now and my ceiling fan I wont need the AC.
