How - I started with a roller block (95 truck) from a local engine rebuilder with 9.5:1 compression, added Edelbrock "Performer" heads and "RPM" manifold, 600CFM Holley DP (I had left over from the 70s), Comp Cams #35-421-8 roller cam & roller rockers. I believe the HP is about 400.
Why - I wanted a streetable and reliable engine, wasn't interested in maximizing HP.
I'm happy with the setup.

Got a free block from my brother in law out of a 76 Torino. I had it bored .030 over and installed a mild cam. I have 98 Explorer 5.0L GT40 heads installed with stiffer springs to match the cam. (5.0L springs were too soft giving me valve float). Edelbrock Performer intake, Edelbrock 1406 600 cfm carb, MSD distributor, MSD Blaster II coil and MSD 6A ignition box. JBA shorty ceramic coated headers, 4R70W trans with 9 inch 3.25 Trac-Lok rear end.

I can guide you on a 351w stroker if interested. Mine is a 393w that makes 520/520 on 91 octane and is tame as you want it to be!

I have learned alot since that previous 351W build!!
I would definitely use a later roller cam block if doing it today, or the big bore Dart aluminum block that I used for my 427 stroker build.

I scored a never run Ford Strokers Dart blocked 427W complete for a pretty good deal.Ended up selling the DSS 410 shortblock I was assembling.
Why? 'Cause I like big cube small blocks and knew it would have a supercharger.

I'm running a 69 block with a stock lower end pistons are 30 over, the heads are 68 302 4v heads with oversize valve and been worked for better flow, the cam is a lunati voodoo hydraulic spec are; 268/276; Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 227/233; Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .522/.538; LSA/ICL: 110/106; Valve Lash (Int/Exh): RPM Range: 1800-6200. dual plane manifold with a quick fuel slayer carb ( 750 cfm). simple and fun engine.

9” or 8.8” would be mandatory?
As a famous person once asked me...”Did Ford put an 8” behind a 351W?”

Transmission would be 1st besides the rear end. Then you'll need to look at your supporting parts assuming you are coming from a 289/302.

I always try to keep the cheapest item in the system the weak link, and in this I believe the tires are the weak link. Unless you mini tubb the biggest tire you'll get on a 65-66 is a 245. A 245 street tire will break loose way before a 8" rear end will go. My 66 had a 351(393) and a Z-spec T5, with a 8" with an Auburn diff and a 3.80 gear. I drove it hard (Not Abusive) and the tire just wouldn't hook.
Now my 68 has a 5.0(331) early T5 (3.35 gear) and narrowed Explorer 8.8 - 3.73 and a 275 tire. I miss the 2.95 first gear.

I have 235’s now with a stock 5.0/T5 and they have limited traction even on a good day.
No mini tubs at this time.
