My shift lever had some delamination of the "chrome" piece on top of it on my 07 Mustang GT. So, I bought a new shift lever from Ford. One little screw in front holds it in place, then it slides off, unplugging the O/D button's wires in the process. I could not get it to go back together! I touched the angle gizmo at the top of the inner lever, where the handle's button allows you to change gears. It came flying out of the shaft it was in, with a spring following. No amount of swearing would get it to go back in there! So now, I have TWO inop vehicles! I cannot get the thing back together and I cannot get the key out of the ignition because of some interlock. I guess I am going to have to remove the entire console to get the shifter off so I can invert it and see what came loose! I should know this by now... ABDFI !!!!!!!
Anyone have experience with this? This thing is absolutely NOTHING LIKE any of the old automatic shifters, so don't bother telling me how to fix the one on the 70 ! I am sure I can figure it out eventually, but it is going to have to come off the car to be able to do it.

OK, well I learned the answer to this question today. I started disassembling things to get to the shifter. Top of console, two side pieces of console, panel with AC controls and flashers, etc, radio, entire console body, then I could GET TO the bolts holding the shifter to the floor.
At that point, I could tilt the shifter towards the driver side maybe 15 degrees to get a better look. Forget removing it. Too much plastic and connections below the floor.
I had to make a special tool to reach down inside the mechanism to hold the metal pawl up into max height position so I could reinstall the button actuated shaft that goes down inside and engages the pawl.
If you ever work on one of these, NEVER rotate the angled piece that engages the shifter handle. Doing so releases a spring loaded plethora of parts releasing energy all over the interior of the car.
I never want to have to work on this car again as long as I live.

Hahahahahahaa! Sorry, just reminds me of too many other things in life not to laugh a little. Kinda like watching someone slip on a banana peel, it may be 'insensitive' but how can you help it???
