the people here have been a bunch of help, so I am going to keep trying to get more repairs done to my car. the awesome emergency brake . the issue is the cable is frayed and ready to break. i'd like to replace it, anyone got any ideas.

Just replace it. To remove it from the backing plate, put a worm type hose clamp around all the spring fingers so you can get it back through the hole. You will have to remove the brake shoes in order to release the cable from the actuation lever.
Assumes you have stock drum brakes. If otherwise, you are going to have to state what you have.

I didn't make my self clear, the handle inside the car, that cable is frayed and needs replacing.

If it's frayed around the pulley, it may have split.

let me try his again, the cable is frayed at the bottom of the "T" handle. has anyone put a new cable in that part of the e brake system? what problems di you have doing so? are there any other options out there to remove and replace that system with one from another car?

At the bottom of the T handle where the cable attaches, is a pulley that the cable rolls over.
When that becomes damaged, it causes the cable to fray.
First link is to the cable you need, second link is to the pulley you probably need.
Edit: assuming you have a 65-66.

This is my low- bucks approach!
Parked on a hill???...Need just a little assurance the old Mustang will stay put......Life expectancy??... "forever" (as long as you don't drop it on hard surfaces) No need to paint and EZ'ly transfers to other Mustangs....maybe found on job sites for free!!
Pile several in the trunk and voila!!!.......lowering blocks

I remember my first car, 1950 Plymouth Cranbrook. Always had to park on a curb since the battery never kept a charge. But that was also the park "brake" since I would always turn front wheels such that if it did roll away it would back into the curb. I could get in the car after school and with left foot out the door roll the thing back and quickly get it in gear and dump the clutch to get it started. Worked great and never rolled away. You gotta remember that was in West Virginia, so nothing was flat. I bought that car for $20.00 ! I finally put an Olds 324 in it with the hydramatic. Then it was a hoot!

Are you the driver in that pic DC?
Val, there is a little trick to removing the cable from the T handle ... butt, you may be smarter than me and not have a problem.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
