Can you explain this on a Holley carb?

Past couple of days working on wife’s truck.
300 straight 6 with offy intake and Holley avenger 470cfm.( it’s an off road carb...came with truck).

All started with up and died on hwy.
Wouldn’t start, got it towed home.

Float appeared to be stuck open.
It has the crossover vents with holes in it like the old lawn sprinkler.
That’s what it looked like on each attempt.

Dug into the problem and made it worse when I backed the float completely out...of course with this off road set up there’s two sets of springs...I recall only one on the mustang 25 years ago.
Anyway, pulled bowl off to correct my screw up.
I’m sure between the float and forgetting to put level plug back in ...twice🥴...I flushed the fuel line and bowl out pretty good.
Pressure regulator was steady at 5 psi.

I got everything back together and it ran ok.
Cleaned up idle screws and set both even amount of turns to start from scratch.
Ran much better, even started better.

Let it sit over night so I can check choke...it’s definitely cooler now.
For the life of me and the battery, wouldn’t start.  Tried several operations, still no go.
I haven’t touched a can of starting fluid on my cars for over 25 years....there was one in garage for the diesel tractor we purchased...haven’t used it on tractor yet.
It started up and was running a little rougher.

So I check a plug for spark as well as distributor...found build up in distributor, cleaned up and starts and runs nice again...
Except for initial tip in of the throttle.
If I tried to ramp rpms up fast it would die or stumble and then rev.
I went round and round both lean and rich just to see how it would respond.
Each time same thing.

Then when I was going back to the best rpm setting....I found this in the picture.
I knew...ummm...that’s not right.
Carefully back into proper position and now it doesn’t stall out and better than new.

I was wondering if the truck was rejecting the Chevy air cleaner assembly?😜
Perhaps BB2 was right.

How did it come out of position?

Re: Can you explain this on a Holley carb?

My guess is you didn't manually put the arm in position when you reinstalled the bowls.

Never mind....I struck again!

Knowing is 1/2 the problem.

Re: Can you explain this on a Holley carb?

That automatically goes to that position when the bowl is loosened, as you know. I had to deal with that the other day when I changed power valves.  Easy to overlook, I suppose.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Re: Can you explain this on a Holley carb?

The carb sits sideways on the Offenhauser 360 intake.

So the linkage and the arm is located between the carb and firewall.

Kneeling on valve cover and radiator during installation and getting the cross tube between bowls, it must have slipped out undetected.

I know one thing, I’m aware of it now.😁
Another lesson learned...hopefully remembered too.😂

Easy to forget when the carb sits cattywhampus on the engine.

We're gonna have to start a complete category of post for the number of tows you get.

Perhaps I should have a solar backup engine.  My luck, would have an eclipse or wildfires blocking the sun.😜

Re: Can you explain this on a Holley carb?

I can't say that I haven't done this myself ... however, I did notice it prior to re-mounting the carb, or starting the engine.

It probably would have been more noticeable if I had taken carb off.
No guarantee though.😁

Re: Can you explain this on a Holley carb?

I have another question about the Holley off road truck avenger carb.

Thanks Rudi for article about tuning Holley street avenger carbs (4/1/2020).
Great read.
FYI, off road carbs have a different float bowl needle assembly.
I verified that!😜

How should fuel exit the nozzles?
Spray?
Stream?

This was best picture I could get.
