Engine, 302 (From 93 thunderbird, ford small block bolt pattern)
Long story short, I mis read the tranny tag on a tranny I bought, and thought I bough a rebuilt 4r70w from a 3.8L mustang. Turns out the tranny came from a 2004 4.6 version. (3R3P-7000-BA vs 3R3P-7000-CA)
What are my options here, what can be done?
Can I get a new "tranny case" and have a shop switch the "gears/internals" from old case to new case so I can bolt up to the 302 and continue with my plan, (already bought baumen quick4)? Or do I need to look and get another tranny built?
Thoughts, comments.?

Swapping the case could be an option ? Il probably do that. I rebuilt my 4r70w my self and it was pretty straight forward.

Its one of those things, its obviously different, but I can't find anyone who knows how different it is. I would probably start by calling Advanced Adapters or Novak. Those companies built adapters for engines, transmissions, and transfer cases for the 4X4 world. If it can be adapted they sell it. We bolted a Puegeot built 5 speed behind a SBC in an '89 Jeep Wrangler once using AA parts.

I know that there are 2 starter bolts in the 351w pattern and 3 in the modular., some of the bolts line up some wont.
Maybe this could be something

Its the opposite of what you would need. It adapts the modular engine to the Windsor bellhousing pattern. Though, if you bought it and could reverse engineer it you could possibly make an adapter that would work. The problem I see if the two reviews are very bad. Likely a US designed part that was made in China with poor QC and what ends up at your door is of questionable accuracy.

I put the wrong link in. They have one for attaching 6r80 4r75 etc to a windsor pattern also.

In that case you should be god to go, provided the machining is right...

I called them up today, and left a VM. I also sent them an email, will let you know what I find out. Thanks guys.....

There is another part that I think is not included in the kit, its the spacer for the converter. But it is on Performance automatics site. They will probably tell you this. Good Luck, I was very interested of doing this my self, attaching the 6r80 to my 351c. But with taxes and shipping to Sweden it kills the deal..

Spoke with the PA folks. They indicated that the adapter used for the 6r80 swap will NOT work with a 4r70w/AODE case with the mod 4.6 pattern. Only option is to find a AODE/4r70w case with the small block ford bolt pattern, and you can swap internals over between the cases.
Ok now off to find a new transmission case.

Try this
Look up part numbers of the internal parts for each tranny. If they are the same, parts will swap.

Another 4R70W option would be one from a Ranger with at 4.2L besides the 3.8L Mustang.

Sorry for the delay, haven't had anytime to post, but, I ended up finding a new transmission case (took a while) and had a transmission shop swap over the internals. Hopefully I'll get that engine and tranny bolted up together soon. Thanks for the help guys appreciate the site/info.... (I will learn from my mistakes)

Are there other “numbers “ that have the correct bolt pattern.
Future reference if I run across one that 2wd.

I have an extra 4R70w for $100 if anyone needs it. From .98 Explorer 5.0, which fits 289, 302,351w, 5.0

Whats needed with the 4r70w to put in a car that's a 3spd (I'm assuming I've got a 6bolt 289)
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
