96 cobra engine temp

Hello everyone,
Im running a 96 cobra drivetrain on a 65 coupe ive been test driving it. The comp was reprogramed and the fan turn on temp was reduced, the should turn on at 190F and should turn off at 180F, ive been checking temp while driving it from obd2 port and the fans do turn on at 190F but they dont turn off due to the temp not going 180F or below, the lowest ive gotten it is 182f. Im runing an afco 80100fn alum radiator, 180 degree t-stat, 50/50 coolant, with stock fan from 96 cobra. Temp never goes above 192 F, i tried a 170 degree t-stat to try to lower the temp but it didnt make a diference so i put the 180 t-stat back on. I also tried a bottle of water weter and no diference either. Can someone let me know what i can do to lower the temps because i dont like that the fan is on constantlly, do i need a larger radiator?

Thanx in advance guys ;)

Re: 96 cobra engine temp

Raise the fan turnoff temp to 185.

Re: 96 cobra engine temp

hornman, that sounds logical but since my computer was reprogramed by a vendor he recomended 180 turn off, so if i wanna do that im gonna need to pay to get it reprogramed again   Is there anything else I can do to lower the temp so the fan cycles on and off.

Thanx

Re: 96 cobra engine temp

I don't know where the temp sensors are in your application but an option may be to install a basic temp on/off switch somewhere in the coolant flow or perhaps in the radiator to open at 185 and close at 195 or 200.  When your coolant drops below 185 the separate switch opens (a separate simple relay may/will be required) and the fan will shut off.  Essentially you are creating a separate on-off switch but the computer will think that it is in control.  Not as elegant as re-programming the computer but probably cheaper and you can also wire the relay to provide an override to run the fan continously in traffic or slow driving so it is on before the computer thinks it should be.  A 170 t-stat is possibly too low for that engine due to the oil temp/condensation reasons but also at some threshold (I don't know where that is) your computer will think the engine is cold and richen up for the cold state.  I am probably over-thinking this but I think it will work.

Re: 96 cobra engine temp

Im using a DC controller that will regulate your fan.  The senor clips into the lower radiator fins and you can set up what ever temp you want.   I think mine was around $110.00.   Mine fan runs all the time when Im in town.  When I hit the Hwy speeds it turns off.

Re: 96 cobra engine temp

Sounds to me like you are just a bit short on radiator or fans or both.  You can change the lower set point as suggested here but I'm betting that around town or in the summer heat its's just gonna short-cycle in a manner that will probably be as annoying  as just steady running.

Probably be okay on the highway but then, you likely wouldn't  hear the fans on the highway anyhow.

Re: 96 cobra engine temp

GPat- I will look into the separate on/off switch you are correct about the 170 tstat thats why i swiched back to 180.

Steve69- i will do a google search on the dc controller but since you said your fan runs all the time in town I should be ok since my temp never goes over 195.

Bulletbob- you might be right about fan short-cycling so i will just drive it some more to see how it goes.

One more question, should the fan turn off when it goes over a certain speed or it only turns off when it goes below the set temp (180F)?

THANX again guys ;)
