Hello all,
I may have a dumb question, but Im not familiar with the difference in shifters.
I have a 66 floor shifter with a busted up console on a non-running car. I have a 65 that I drove to Ft.Walton in 16' that has regular floor shifter.
Would it be a good idea to swap shifters for the 65, in the event I come across a console in the future? If I do swap them, is there a housing that I can use that has the PRNDL indicators or do I have to have the console to have the indicators?
Hope that makes sense.

The 65/66 shifter has it’s own gear indicator assembly on top that is flat for center console use.
You will need it in order to install a console.
The console selector shifter assembly can be used without a console on it.
You just have to be careful, it will snag clothing and no protection for plastic gear indicator.
I did for many years.
It’s nice to have it back in the car.

I think...always get's me in trouble...that the C4 auto shifter for a 65 and 66 are the same, Oscar. You can change the console shifter to a non-console unit by purchasing the standard floor bezel and mount (check NPD catalog for the necessary parts). The floor bezel has the P,R,N,green dot, D,L indicator strip just like the one for the console except it's slightly curved on the standard floor unit.
Good luck, hope all your great family are doing well in these goofy times. Looking forward to seeing you again.

Thanks for the input fellas. I will see if I have an old standard shifter bezel laying around and see how that works out Bob.. I knew the console one is flatter than the plain shifter, but I didnt know you could put the plain bezel on the console shifter.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
