I bought a rear end that has a auburn posi unit. I was told that it doesn't require a additive to the 90 weight gear oil.

This Auburn LSD says it uses "friction modifier". That is the additive that clutch style LSDs use. If it is a helical gear style LSD like the Eaton Tru-Trac it doesn't need the friction modifier.

It definitely still needs friction modifier. Auburns work using cone clutches instead of the more traditional plate clutches, but its the same material for the friction lining, so it still needs the modifier.
The only LSDs that don't need friction modifier are the gear type like a TrueTrac.

When I received my rear from Strange (put an Eaton TrueTrac in it) they shipped the friction modifier with it and their instructions said to use it. Perhaps just added insurance?

With a gear type LSD you aren't going to damage anything using friction modifier, or synthetic oil. Its not like those things would make it not work. However, there may be some effect on operation, likely that torque transfer would be delayed. Probably for a tiny fraction of a second, and possibly not even enough to notice or fine unnerving. I will note that according to Eaton friction modifier should not be used.

Interesting. I guess when I remove the 3rd member at the 500 mile mark to thoroughly clean it out, I won't use any friction modifier when I refill it.
