I think my 3g alternator is fried?

So yesterday I discovered my heater core leaking.  I ran a 20” heater hose to by-Pass the heater core and in the process, a little coolant fell into the alternator.  Next thing I know I see smoke coming from the back of alternator.  I disconnected the ground to battery and used compressed air to blow out any coolant from alternator.  But every time I touched the ground to battery the smoke would continue from alternator.
I haven’t tried starting the car, because if I connect ground it will start smoking.  So, what should I do?

I would loan you my tool to put the smoke back in but last time I used it, it didn't work. If you blew it out good to dry, it sounds like it's time for a rebuild or replace.

If this forum can't fix it, it isn't broke.

Re: I think my 3g alternator is fried?

While I was drying all the coolant, I knocked the one wire from alt. That plugs into a oem 3 prong female terminal.  I connected the 1 wire to the white lead and when I touch the ground on the batt. I hear a noise, like current or something.  Does anyone know where the 1 wire from alt. Goes to?  I may have put it in the wrong slot.

Re: I think my 3g alternator is fried?

It looks like you are using old wiring with a new style alternator and without knowing how your car is wired the best I can tell you have the green/red wire in the correct place. Maybe give a little more info on how the 3g was installed.

Re: I think my 3g alternator is fried?

Well, someone did the 3g conversion 5 yrs ago.  Never had any problems.  The plug in the picture came loose after I was trying to dry all the coolant.  I believe that’s where the green and red was connected, but it may have been in the middle slot.  I’m not sure?  I will say the white wire slot was made a little bigger as to fit the red/green connector, that’s why I put it there instead of the black/yellow (middle)

Re: I think my 3g alternator is fried?

Grab your volt meter, start the car, check to see if the alternator is putting out.

Or, remove the alternator and take it to the parts store. They'll spin it on their machine and check it out.

Either way, you'll know if it's still good or toast.

The way you have the grn/red wire plugged in is correct.  I checked mine to verify.

Oz

FYI, they make bullet connectors in two different diameter sizes.

Re: I think my 3g alternator is fried?

Thanks for clarifying that for me Josh.  I’m going to take the alt. Off and take it to get it tested.
