1966 Mustang Coupe....
Pretty sure I know the answer to this but thought I'd ask anyway. I need to replace just the weather strip on the vent window division bar. Do I really need to take the entire door apart? Seems like the right way is to pull the entire vent assembly which involves pulling the entire window assembly out of the car. Seems like quite the beating but a good winter project in my budget.
Anyone manage to replace the weather stripping w/o tearing down the entire door? To be clear, I only need to replace the straight piece of weather stripping that's on the division bar, not the entire seal around the window. BUT if I do have to pull the entire window then I'm going to replace the entire seal.
thanks

For clarification, are you needing to replace the vent window side of the division bar, or the "U" shaped channel on the door glass side of the division bar? I replaced the door glass weatherstripping without removing the vent window frame. I did remove the door glass to do it. (Per MS recommendation, I used some velcro in the channel in stead of repop window channel stuff, and it worked great).
I did not replace the vent window seals, so I cannot speak to that.

As I recall...it's been six years...the vent seal is two piece but I think you'll need to remove and at least partially disassemble the vent frame to replace the seal on the division bar.
If you are careful, you may be able to remove the vent frame/window without removing the door window.
I think....maybe

The vent window side. The side that comes in contact with the vent windows when it rotates to close. There's a straight strip of weather seal that goes there, looks like it's held in by a couple of rivets. Not sure if I can remove it w/ the vent assembly on the door. It's all chipped, cracked, and missing. When I wash the car I get spray into the drivers seat area. I saw a good video on replacing/ repairing the vent window but they took apart the entire door just to remove the vent window and did it all on bench. If I had to do that I was going to go ahead and buy some fancy replacement mirrors to install correctly from the inside of the door while I was there.

The vent window seals have been held in place on my fastback with black RTV for nearly 25 years, now. I have NEVER opened the vent windows, just to be sure they stay put.
You CAN pull the vent window frame and glass channel without pulling the window glass.

Yea I have no idea as to the functionality of those vent windows other than serving as a large drag coefficient when open. But I got small kids that love to play and open everything. Not that I plan on doing a lot of driving in the rain but I might as well get this fixed.
I'll probably give it a shot to remove just the vent windows.

You have to remove the entire front track and vent window frame in order to remove the vent windows and change the “L” shaped seals.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
