Whishful Thinking

My latest issue with my F100, Since I swapped in the crown vic front end and rebuilt the 351w, I absolutely love driving my old truck. The problem is that I have three boys, one eleven year old and twin six year olds, and they all three love going everywhere with me in the old truck. This means someone is always left out, which does not go over very well. I have though about putting some seats in the bed like the old Subaru Brat. Am I just wishful thinking, and throwing good money after bad, or do you think this is a viable option. I though about some with a lower back that a soft bed cover would hide when not in use.

The only other option would be to sell it and get something different.

Re: Whishful Thinking

Most places these days will lock you up and forget where  they put the key if  you let your dog ride in the back....Kids are probably be okay.

It's kind of a tough call.  If you make provision to have them belted down good, letting  them ride in back under some  conditions  might  be okay.  On the freeway at speed, I  don't think I would regardless of the laws.

Back in the day we went cross country with both  kids in the back of the truck laying on a bed-level deck in the camper shell.  We had a  boot so we could get a good swing at them if they got too loud.

Don't guess I'd do that in these days of enlightenment.

Re: Whishful Thinking

You could let the eleven year old drive the six year olds around and you stay home. I suspect that would be the boy's favorite option.

Seats in the bed? Depends on whether that is allowed in your jourisdiction. If so, i bet the boys fight over who gets the "back seats".

Re: Whishful Thinking

Yea, I know all that, that's why I said wishful thinking. I would end up spending lots of time and money on rigging something up, knowing theres no way in the world that I would let them ride back there farther than around the block.

My wife gets a little aggrivated at the time and energy spent on the truck, when they all can't ride at the same time.

This is basically all my fault, because I had the boys way before the truck, and should have considered this before hand.

Re: Whishful Thinking

Four seatbelts in the front.  Done

In Texas, it is illegal for anyone under 13 years old to ride in the bed of the truck.  Not sure why that is the magic number.  They would still be just as dead in a collision at 14...

The truck is done and driveable.  Park it and get something you all fit in if seating 4 across is out of the question.  But keep the truck.  The boys won't be around forever.

Or pay one of them $5 to "sit this one out" whenever you go for a ride...

Re: Whishful Thinking

...you could find a truck that's the same basic body style as what you have but in the '75-'79 Supercab version that would easily seat 5,  and maybe 6. They were available in F-150, 250 & 350 4x4 & 2-wheel drive trucks with long or short beds;

...or find a '73-'79 crew cab that would definitely seat 6 in F-250 or F-350 4x4 or 2-wheel drive trucks with long or short beds;

OLD GUY'S RANT!...
Yeah BB...we usta do the same thing. We would ride(STANDING UP!!) in the back of my uncles pick-up,and wave at the cops while do'in it!
Wonder when......after years of doing it......"OH MAY LORD!!!!...that is to dangerous for the......chilllllderennnn! We need a LAW!
If a person is so stupid he rides standing up in the back of a truck and a bug puts his eye out..oh well.....sux to be you! Its YOUR eyes!! Guess your parents shoulda told you,or.....maybe you should have tried a little.....THINKING..before do'in it.
Or if you fly out of the back because you were sitting on the sides of the bed.....do we REALLY need to be "protected" from our decisions?
  I think it should be perfectly all right to let your kids ride in the back. Just tell them...."IF I catch anybody standing up...your getting a spanking...cause its dangerous to stand up in a moving truck."!
YeeeHawwww!!

Re: Whishful Thinking

The problem with kids riding in the back is that they die if they fall out.  I had a high school buddy die sitting on the side inner fender when the truck went around a corner.  No wreck, no bump, no skid, just OUT.  Its just too hard to try and say I TOLD YOU SO after that happens.

Re: Whishful Thinking

Ok guys remember the title of this post, wishful thinking. I was just wishing I could come up with a way for me and the boys to all ride in the truck. Other than out at the family farm, that is not going to happen and if for some reason I lost my mind for a moment, my wife would quickly knock it back in shape. In reality my best bet is mustang Steve's option of the $5 has the best chances of working. In five years my oldest boy can just take the truck and his brothers.

Hope to all you guys Saturday ( in the truck)

Re: Whishful Thinking

I'm another one those kids that rode many miles around Texas in the bed of a truck sitting in a lawn chair backed up against the cab.
Kar, if you and the boys will all fit across the seat of the truck and the lack of a fourth seat belt is the problem, put the twins in the center under one seat belt. Study your laws. Does it stipulate that each person has to have their own seat belt, or just be belted in.
IIRC, for Texas from a defensive driving class several years back, everyone in the car has to have a seat belt on if possible. This would allow the couple with 3-5 kids to drive around in the little cars with not near enough room without the fear of being ticketed each time a cop saw them.
