    289 Water Pump

    I have a 66 289 that I've had cooling issues in the past.  I've just replaced the rad with an aluminum one and just finished tearing down the top end and have found the the head gasket was leaking causing air locks in my cooling system.  I have just sent the heads out to the machine shop to get checked and fix any problems.  I also want to relace the water pump to eliminate any further problems.  What do you guys recommend from expierience?  I was thinking about a high flow unit from Edelbrock, but i'ts a little pricey is there something else that works well but is more cost effective?  Thanks!

    I have used a Stewart water pump on my '92 5.0 LX. They make very high flow pumps that require thermostats with bypass holes because of the pressure. This does cause the engine to take longer to warm up, but you will have NO cooling issues due to flow problems. I spent a couple summers taking several trips to Vegas and Phoenix with no problems ever.  Stewartcomponents.com and read through their tech section.  Worth it to check out at least. 

    '66 Fastback since July 27, 1981. Springtime Yellow, originally a 200 cu in, 4 speed. Also a '92 LX Coupe, 5.0, 5 speed.

    My over heating cure was......4-core radiator(not alum,but an alum would be even better)..standard replacement water pump...here's the BIG improvement...the Shelby front apron! After that......ZERO cooling problems!
    Alum rad and stock replacement pump should work great.

    The stock replacement water pump from your local auto partsd store will move plenty of water.  If you are having overheating issues, and the pump is working at all, the pump is not the cause of the problem.

    Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

    I have found that the stock water pump moves lots of water. I replaced my rad with a 3 row (large dia.) core. Works great.  Mark

    Thanks for the replys but the overheating is due to a leaking head gasket that was causing air locks in my cooling system.  I was just wondering while I have it all apart if a high flow pump would be extra insurance on keeping it cool.  I haven't really run it yet with aluminum rad and properly sealing head gasket.  The cause of the head gasket failure was the previous half plugged original rad which caused the motor to overheat.

    Got an oe style cast iron from AutoZone for about $20. Works great.  One bit of advice -avoid the temptation save a few bucks by getting a reman. They tend to leak after short time.
