I made a post earlier
about the leadscrew on my lathe being standard ACME threads on a 20mm shaft. Anyway I needed a new brass nut so I purchased a 3/4-10 lh acme nut and modified the end of my leadscrew by tapering the end and cutting 8 groves in its threads kind of like a tap. I cut the nut in half and then spent 3 hours total working both donuts back and forth on the leadscrew. It was a pain but worked and I know have nuts with the correct thread.Offline
Ain't ingin-nuity grand. Good for you....again....Day.

Just so I understand correctly, for me. I’m not a machinist.
You made your existing leadscrew into a tap for your brass nuts?

That’s exactly what I did it was just the tip that never drives the carriage. I use the word “tap” loosely as I was not able to create new threads in a piece of aluminum but it did the job of enlarging the original threads. The nut was .030” to small and now it’s a perfect fit for the leadscrew.

Nice thread chaser.
One of my valued tools...is a cheap thread chaser for spark plugs that I bought years ago.
I’ve made makeshift chasers with bolts and a grinder at work.
The first time I did it the guys were trying to figure out what i was making.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
