Ignition switch removal when there’s No key?

Hello everyone, Is drilling out the tumbler the only way to get the switch out when you don’t have a key?

That is how I did it....

That or pick the lock.  Automotive lock cylinders are usually at least 5 tumblers though, so its a hard lock to learn on.

Or pull out a door lock and get a key cut for that.

Re: Ignition switch removal when there’s No key?

I'm not positive but I think the whole assembly is held in with a small pin that you can get to with the steering wheel pulled.  The pin has a cam system so it can only be depressed when the key is not in the lock position.  If you could come up with a way to eliminate that pin it should all just slide out.   I think the column parts are zinc, which isn't very robust.  There is a good chance of damaging your column from drilling the cylinder or retention pin, so keep that in mind.

If I remember correctly, there is sometimes a 'code' number on the door lock that can be read once the lock is removed.  This number is also on the ignition lock, but you have to remove the cylinder to see it.

Ozblitz - Just to clarify, we are talking about a dash mounted ignition, rather than a steering column mounted ignition, right?
