Steve;
Thanks for the response. I'm thinking that maybe it really was the regulator. I had already run continuity checks on all the wires and removed/inspected the wires and connectors from the plug before changing the reg out. The harness was replaced about 5000 miles back. I guess I HOPE it was the regualtor. Don't want to play this game again anytime soon.

I'm thinking the problem is solved. After running continuity checks on every wire throughout the charging system, I finally went back and replaced the parts store regulator with a Motorcraft replacement from Dallas Mustang. Problem solved. I guess it shows to go ya that you get what you pay for...
Thanks to all that responded.

Got a charging problem on a 66 gt. Until recently, charging system working as expected. Showing 12.5V with engine off and 14.2V when running at about 1000 rpm. Guage showing moderate movement to the right after startup and settle back to center in a minute or two. All is well.
Now I've got no movement of guage after startup. It will move a little to the left if you turn the lights on. Voltage at battery is 12.1V with engine off and 11.98 at 1000rpm. Thought it might be the regualtor. Put a new one on. No change. Ok, then it's got to be the alternator. Put a new one on. No change.Appears to be just running off the battery (1yr. old Optima). Figuring it won't run long off of it, though...
Anybody got any thoughts, I'm fresh out.
Thanks in advance

Yea, they were tight and in good shape. Since this car has been repainted underhood, I guess it could be possible that maybe there was paint under the soleonoid base, but you would think that the screws would have been ground enough. I like your idea of welding the nuts on the backside. I guess I could replace the screws with bolts, but I guess I'm kinda funny about using original fasteners.Anyhow, for now, I'm gonna run it with the wire in place for awhile and see if it continues to behave itself.
Thanks

Just an update on the problem. First, thanks to all that responded. After talking to folks alot smarter than me, including an electrical engineer, we decided to try something completely unorthodox....
I ran a ground wire from the negative side of the battery to the base of the starter solenoid. The thinking here was that possibly there was insufficient ground allowing the solenoid to 'hang up'. Yea, I know, Ford didn't run a ground to the base, but it was worth a try. After running the ground wire about a month ago, I have not had the thing act up again. I'm not about to say it's cured, but it has worked perfectly since then.
Go figure.
Again, thanks for all the thoughts and advice.

Thanks to everyone who has responded.
Just for information, the car does have an aftermarket ignition (unilite) and coil (also mallory). Also running aftermarket tach (autometer). Understand that all above mods have been on the car for appx. 7 years without causing issues.Only other thing replaced in the last 6 months or so has been a new battetry (Optima, if it matters...)
About a year ago, had the remnants of the pink resistor wire burn into. Most of it had been replaced before I bought it with12ga wire. While replacing the pink wire complete, ohmed all wires in the harness and all checked out ok. Don't know if any of this is pertinent, but will pass it along anyway. Installed the repaired harness exactly as schematic showed ( I had wire numbered EVERYTHING)
Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance

Gentlemen (and Ladies)-
I'm struggling with a problem I can't correct. My 66gt will intermittently decide to keep running with the ignition switch off. This is not 'dieseling', it continues to run as normal. All guages go to off readings, radio goes dead, but engine continues to run. I ran into this about 6 months ago and replaced the soleonoid and ignition switch (both motorcraft replacements). Haven't had the problem again until yesterday. Anybody got an idea?
Thanks in advance
