Fracking Drum Brakes

My 67 came from the factory with Power Disc/Drum brakes. Last summer the right rear drum was locking prematurely, so come winter the brakes would get looked at.
Winter is almost over and I am at the butt end of the car working on those Friggin drum brakes. I had to pull the right backing plate and weld/grind the shoe pedestals, what a pain in the arse that was.
Putting it all back together now and for the life of me I cannot get the self-adjuster spring hooked up. There is no place for the brake tool to grab on the shoe, no rivets, no nothing. Plus the friggin axle is in the way so getting the angle of the dangle correct for the spring to catch is darn near impossible. I gave up and grabbed a beer instead of smashing the quarter panel with the brake tool. Who needs self adjusters anyway?
Once I cool down, like maybe tomorrow, I'll tackle it again.
The next time I service the butt brakes they gonna to be converted to discs. With stock front discs (Bendex) what kind of parts would I need to convert the butt-end to discs?

Re: Fracking Drum Brakes

If I recall I would hook it up first before I installed any other springs but then again it’s been several years since I touched one.

I may try that tomorrow. When I was a kid all of our cars had drum brakes. I changed a lot of them in my youth. Heck, drums were all I knew. I guess I didn't know better, but now I do.

Re: Fracking Drum Brakes

There is actually a couple few good videos on you tube that would be helpful in helping you deal with the springs.  Watching videos, one tends to see a tool used in a very helpful way you may never have thought of.     Food for thought!

If multiple things can go wrong, the one that will go wrong will be the one that causes the most damage.

Re: Fracking Drum Brakes

My method

Attach cable to the adjuster lever, routing the cable through the round gizmo and already hooked at the top stud.
Hold the lever with pliers and pull it down until the tab slides into the shoe at the bottom.  That way you are not even messing with the spring.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Re: Fracking Drum Brakes

OK, I won! I used a modified MS's method modified a bit. With the primary shoe loose I was able to get the spring caught on the dohicky that the cable is attached to. Once that was done I just pulled the primary shoe in place and installed the retainers and the big sprang. The second side went together like I knews what I was doing.
