    I have some rust under my drip rails on my coupe

    I have a little rust under both sides of my drip rails. Should I be able to just remove the drip rails by simply drilling out the spot welds or is the drip rail tied in some where else? Also do the new coupe roofs come with new drip rails attached?

    I'm not a body man but I believe that you can't simply cut out the drip rails as that seam ties the roof to the rest of the body and adds rigidity to the joint.  I know people do remove them, but I believe that they also provide some kind of additional support in that joint area.

    65 Fastback, 351W, 5-speed, 4 wheel discs, 9" rear,  R&C Front End.

    I KNOW this solution won't be a "SOLUTION" (just a fix butt).....I wonder if....you could get some thin sheet metal/stainless/polished Alu. whatever and attach it to the bottom of the rusty drip rails?
    Maybe epoxy or body panel adhesive??! Done right it could look pretty nice(especially since the doors are closed 90% of the time!!)
    Cover up what's there now and just enjoy the car for many years! Maybe spray some POR-15 on it before the 'big-cover-up'!?
    Not a permanent fix butt.....who cares if it last another 20 years?!
    Years from now there may not be gasoline! A United States (as we know it) All electric? You may be dead!
    Unless its a show-boat.."fix it" and enjoy it.
    I'm beginning to get this mind-set more-and-more.
    They CERTAINLY weren't built to last as long as they have!!
    (from FoMoCo..unpainted/primed cowls....inside doors etc.)

    Out in cyberspace there must be a group forming that addresses the conversion of early Mustangs to full electric power.

    I was thinking of removing the rail up just past the wing window theres a split in the dip rail I was thinking cut along the split then weld on some new metal in the area behind the rail then re attach thd rail to the car.

    There was a very nice 68 coupe on my local Craigslist that someone had started converting to electric. The body was rust free and straight and they had the electric motor mounted between the shock towers but hadn't really done any hacking or anything that was not easily reversible. If I had the room to store it, I would have bought it and converted it back.

    The new roof panel will just have a lip that sits down inside or on top of the drip rail.

    Thank you thats what I was thinking. Do you guys suggest drilling the roof spot welds from the top of the drip rails?
