The Barra engine is 4 litre and 6 cylinder.

1200 HP is impressive.... talk about overkill for the street. Too bad he put a power glide behind it. I've never seen a dyno connection like that for a car.

Yeah, those Barra engines are stout. The glide, unfortunately, is the easiest. most reliable trans to put behind a killer engine. With that kind of torque you don't need the gearing advantage of a 3 or 4 speed; they just have more parts to potentially break.

I noticed that engine did not move at all under the hood while running on the dyno. With those close tolerances, I expected the engine did not have any room to move around under the hood.

Its probably got solid motor mounts or a plate system. At about 600HP conventional V8 motor mounts become a liability. I've seen mounts break, and even blocks crack at the mount pad. Some type of a torque strap can crutch it, but not at this kind of power level, and the better solution is sold mounts, or even better a motor plates where you tie both the front and rear of the engine into the chassis.

A stock Mustang unibody vs a 1200hp engine launch... That can't be a pretty sight.
That '66 body must be very, very far from stock.

Probably has convertible bracing and then some.
Video claims Ford designed....yeah right.
Impressive engine though.

Engines like the Barra are not unique. We just don't get them here because Americans seem too caught up with V8s. Ford and GM build awesome products in Oz that we mostly never see here. Remember the most recent GTO? Basically just a Holden (GM's Oz division) Monaro with different bodywork.
Toyota built the 2JZ straight six, easily capable of 1,000+ HP with very little done to the engine itself.
Nissan built the RB26DETT straight six, which was a twin turbo in factory trim, and is also routinely built past 1,000HP.
Its not really all that hard, you just need an engine whose architecture is stout enough to handle a lot of boost. Not for nothing, but the Cummins 6BT straight six Diesel used in the Dodge trucks is pretty easy to get to 1,000HP and 2,000 lbs/ft. I've seen it and its smaller 4 cylinder brother the 4BT used in car swaps. The biggest downside is weight and packaging them.

Thanks for the link. Interesting info.

I thought so too. About a year ago there was one on Ebay for $1,800, saw one yesterday for $4k!
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
