Bellhousing Question

I have 164 tooth toploader bellhousing.  I was thinking of switching to a 157 tooth flywheel and bellhousing. Seems to be more clutch options with the 157 flywheel.   Is the Z bar linkage the same for both bellhousings? 

What street/strip clutch and pressure plate have you been happy with?

Make sure the flywheel balance is the same for both.  big problems otherwise.

This is what I am using for a stock ‘92 5.0L/T5 combo.
It’s been used with 3.73’s (in ‘92) and now 3.25’s (in ‘65).

'66 Fastback since July 27, 1981. Springtime Yellow, originally a 200 cu in, 4 speed. Also a '92 LX Coupe, 5.0, 5 speed.

Hey Dan,  Are you running a stock 5.0 flywheel on this clutch?   10.4?

With an appropriately drilled 164T flywheel you can use the 10", 10.5" or 11" clutch. With an appropriately drilled 157T flywheel you are limited to the 10" or 10.5" clutch.

Check to verify the 164-tooth flywheel’s diameter isn’t larger than the 157 tooth, and the block plate maybe different also.  I did run into this many years ago, and the scatter-shield I had did have two starter mounting holes.  Anyway, something to check.  I have a Centerforce clutch/pressure plate (diaphragm type) and am happy with it.


65 Fastback, 351W, 5-speed, 4 wheel discs, 9" rear,  R&C Front End.

I had factory stock 92 flywheel resurfaced locally, when Advanced Auto used to be a Napa.

If I remember correctly, Engineering number started with E6 just like my bell housing.

Keep in mind, the 5.0L is 50oz balance.
Prior to 82(?) was 28oz balance.
This is also for T5 , not familiar with requirements for Toploader.

A wrong balance on a flywheel will cause vibration at damn near any RPM. Please don't ask how I know.

Sorry, I didn’t see your reply earlier.  Yeah, a serious banging and wobble shake ensued.  It was immediate and loud.  One of those “Oh, man…this whole thing’s gotta come back out again!” moments.  haven’t really thought about it since the 90’s and was really careful swapping the other trans I did a few years later.  I took the AOD out of my ‘85 T-bird and put it behind my 250.  I think I put the 5.0 flex plate on cuz the C4 plate wouldn’t bolt up to the crank or torque converter.  Yeah, the 5.0 plate didn’t work either, but it bolted up.  I found some guy at a wrecking yard in Mojave, California who knew immediately what part I needed.  One of those flex plates from a 1980-ish Ford 200 that I believe used a V8 bell housing pattern for a couple years? It’s been forever so I may have the story totally messed up in my head.
