The Province of Ontario just gave car owners a gift.
Premier Doug Ford has suspended the annual fee for renewal of the license plates.
It costs me $150.00 a year per vehicle which ends up a $300.00 fee I don’t have to shell out anymore.
Any of you guys still have an annual car license fee?

Missouri has annual license fees (or you can buy two years at a time) and personal property tax base on the value of the vehicle.
Tags are $25 / year or so plus the safety inspection and personal property was $700 or so last year for our rogue, odyssey, wrangler, and mustang.

Ontario did away with emission testing a few years ago.
Canada also did away with the penny as well.

Illinois is about 150 per year for passenger vehicles So I'm in for about 300 for the DD's Mustang has "expanded antique" plates which prohibit driving in the winter months, but has unlimited miles in summer months. Fee for EA plates is 51 per year. I've got antique plates on the 75 Olds 98 which is $13 for 2 years. Many restrictions for the AV plates which, fortunately, Wisconsin does not enforce.
And then there's the motorcycles and scooters....
Vanity plates up the fees a fair amount.
Illinois requires periodic emissions test in the densely populated urban areas only, and only for OBD2 compliant vehicles. No fee
Safety inspections for commercial vehicles only. Fee applies.

No fee in DE for antiques. Anything not titled as an antique is subject to inspection. Inspection for anything '96 or newer is basically a joke. They check wipers, lights, horn, and to make sure the windows aren't tinted too dark. Then they plug into the OBDII port and if there are no codes you're good to go. Older vehicles they check for cats with a mirror and do a sniff test running at idle.
A new vehicle can get a 5 year tag with no inspection, after which you can choose 1 or 2 years. DE splits vehicles into PC (Partly Commercial) and C (Commercial) based on weight. PC vehicles are less than $80 for 2 years, but C vehicles are double that.

Antique in PA is a onetime fee. It was $90 with no inspection.
Since the wife and I have reached full maturity, we are allowed one each to register our DD for $10 yearly and we have yearly inspection. Emission testing exempt after 25 years
3/4 ton truck reg. 9300# was $180 now $10
Car was $44 now $10.

Just updated my 65’s NYS registration, cost $125 for a two-year term. I could have got the ‘new’ style NY plate (or tag) for $150, or a new plate with my old plate number for $170. I declined these two options.
Registration costs in NYS is based on the weight of the vehicle, as the weight goes up, so does the fee.
NYS inspection is a yearly duration based on the month you registered the vehicle however, due to the age, my 65 it is not required to be emission tested. Failure to get the yearly inspection is a “moving violation”, and counts for ‘points’ on your license.

Its about $300 for collectors plates and one time fee in Wisconsin. You cant drive in January is the only restriction.

I believe this should be "can't", instead of "can", but am wondering the reasoning? (Although I'm guessing that Wisconsin weather in January may not be ideal for cruising!)

BobE, In Illinois there are a lot of daily driver cars and trucks that are 25 years old. It the State did not put sufficient restrictions on the antique plates, it is my firm belief that most owners of 25 year old cars would register them as antiques, and deprive the State of $100-$150 per car.
As to cruising in Wisconsin in January, I'm fairly confident it involves the use of a "snow machine"

Yeah, but probably not December or February either, so why just January?

A little more on PA, my 1/2 ton F150 is about $75 for yearly license. I live in a county that is emission exempt, still pay for a yearly inspection that is around $25 to $30.

In tax happy Washington last year I paid licensing fees of $130 for my 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee, $74 for my 68 Mustang, and $458 for my 2017 Ford Explorer. The fees are computed by an effed up fee schedule that is based on what the vehicle was worth when new in order to pay for an ongoing Rapid Transit system being built in the greater Seattle area. The law got passed and the public unwittingly voted for it without reading the fine print. Guess they're also trying to make up for lost revenue because the emissions testing program was discontinued.

Government has a way of putting a feel good name on a bill then stick you from behind after it passes. PA don't require a plate on front of the car. When I was a kid my dad had a had a front plate that read "Pennsylvania Land of Taxes". We were in NY one time, him and some guy in a gas station were going at it on which of their states had the most taxes. Sounds like some other states have found very creative ways to pick your pocket.

In MT if the car is at least 11 years old you have a choice, you can pay an annual fee OR you can pay a fee for a preeminent plate and never need to register again. The permanent plate is about 3 X the normal registration fee and is not transferable or refundable so as long as you have the car for at least 3 years it pays for itself.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
