Clutch Safety switch and Efi

Still slowly working on the 67 coupe installing a 5.0 with EFI. T5.

I don't have a switch on my clutch and see the clutch safety switch wire in the loom. I am assuming it is for idle purposes and starting.

Do i need one, or can it be put into the neutral safety switch wiring?

Re: Clutch Safety switch and Efi

What are the wire colors or ecm pinout numbers?

What year harness are you modifying?

Re: Clutch Safety switch and Efi

Hi everybody,

The Neutral Drive Switch (or NDS or NSS) works by feeding a 12v  signal to the ecm #30 wire when cranking!

The Clutch Engine Switch (or CES) works by interrupting the  #30 wire to the #46 signal return wire OR connecting them (can't remember exactly). Some T5s also have a Neutral Gear switch (or NGS) that goes paralel to the clutch switch.

I have the same setup on my '67 and have none of the above installed so i don't have get in the car to start the engine.

Re: Clutch Safety switch and Efi

How old are you Alan?!!
The reason I axe is.....IF you're 60-ish + then you grew up when guys 'drove' cars and KNEW to do several things involved in 'driving' a car.
One was...depress the clutch when you want to crank the engine. IF you didn't it would jump & growl and do the Hucle-Buck
until you said "WOW.. I forgot to mash the clutch!"
IF you didn't it might smash into the car (or wall) in front of you!
I guess I'm trying to say........"I don't NEED some factory installed "safety switch" to make me a good & safe driver...it's up to me to 'think a little' and depress the clutch before I crank the engine!
This isn't a 'knock' on younger drivers.
Since we choose to enjoy these 'primitive"(by today's standards) hot rods/performance cars/old skool rods....they need to be DRIVEN...not just rode in!
(Since you are a regular on MS FYI Fords I already know you know this)
Cut it off and tape up the end!!!

Dan, I have a painless wiring harness 60510 with and A9L ecm.
Was just wondering if i could get by without the switch for now.

6s6, yes i am 60+. And have also started the car without the clutch in. Was in 1st gear and it started on the first crank. Came with 2" of going through the garage door.  Gives you that "Man that was stupid feeling''

Re: Clutch Safety switch and Efi

I wired my T5 into my factory wiring and now it must be in neutral to start the car.

http://www.veryuseful.com/mustang/tech/engine/images/91-93_5.0_EEC_Wiring_Diagram.gif

In lower right hand corner are 2 switches.

The foxbody Clutch Pedal Switch actually has 2 switches built into it.
One for start circuit, second for ECM pins 30 & 46.

Near front upper LH side on T5 is the Neutral Sensing Switch with attached pigtail, if it is still there.  This switch was connected in parallel to the Clutch Pedal Switch.

The Clutch Pedal Position is closed when clutch is depressed to floor.

The Neutral Sensing Switch is closed when in transmission is in neutral.

Take a look at the following pages from Ford Racing:

https://www.jegs.com/InstallationInstructions/300/397/397-M-12071-A50.pdf

Page 12…bottom “Technical Tidbit”

Page 18…Pin 30 & 46 descriptions

Page 19…Upper LH ….wiring of manual transmission

With my modified factory 91 harness, I ran 30 & 46 with my diagnostic connectors.
When I need to perform a KOER test, a jumper is placed across the factory connector pins.
Eventually I may run to transmission or a toggle switch.

Re: Clutch Safety switch and Efi

I ran 30 & 46 near my test connectors.
I even have a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)…aka “check engine” so I can pull codes.
It’s over by glove box and heater.
My ECM is above the factory radio.

I launch my dads tractor one time.  I learned real quick what not to do.  I think I was only 12 or 14 when I made that mistake.
