Yep, second one looks much better.  And, practice does make perfect.

Please excuse the poor drawing but it was the only way I could convey what I did.  The first attempt (pictured left) was a simple looping stitch. Sorry I don't know the real name for these stich types just calling them what makes sense.  Problem was as I pulled the thread tight there was a tendency for the edges of the leather to overlap each other and the stitching loosened up easily as I went.  The better stitch (pictured right) is what I would call an "over under" Every time I pushed the needle through the leather it was always from the underside.  this had two benefits, no mater how hard I pulled, the edges of the leather met end to end rather than overlapping and because of every stitch going in and under as I pulled the thread tight the stitching held tight.

Looks like a baseball stitch to me. The first one looks like a "get it done stitch".

I have always said I didn’t learn all this stuff by doing it right the first time.

As for steering wheel cover….
Seems that I don’t need one because my hands are too numb to feel it after about twenty miles.
