I am a firm believer in the adage of "do it right the first time" This adage is however in direct conflict with my willingness to jump in and do something I have never done before or modify something in a way that was never intended. In those cases it usually works out on the first try but little imperfections bother me and I usually learned so much doing it that the "second time" it turns out much better so more often than not I start over. A perfect example is a project I did exactly a year ago (post about it quoted below). I had never stitched a leather cover on to a steering wheel. The result was okay and I hoped that with time the leather would relax a little bit and the puckers would smooth out. THEY DID NOT. So I pulled the steering wheel, cut the stitching, removed the cover, added more foam padding to the wheel and then reinstalled the cover using a better stitch technique. The result (pictured below the quote) is IMHO fare superior to the first attempt. I guess the old adage "practice makes perfect" is also correct 😂

Some time in the past I posted a pictures of when I put a Mustang steering column in the Galaxie. Mr. Tim noticed my steering wheel cover and suggested I upgrade to a stitch up cover as it "would look more professional" Turns out he was correct.

Could you share the stitch you used?
Guess you can button up this project.

Please excuse the poor drawing but it was the only way I could convey what I did. The first attempt (pictured left) was a simple looping stitch. Sorry I don't know the real name for these stich types just calling them what makes sense. Problem was as I pulled the thread tight there was a tendency for the edges of the leather to overlap each other and the stitching loosened up easily as I went. The better stitch (pictured right) is what I would call an "over under" Every time I pushed the needle through the leather it was always from the underside. this had two benefits, no mater how hard I pulled, the edges of the leather met end to end rather than overlapping and because of every stitch going in and under as I pulled the thread tight the stitching held tight.

When I made the original post a year ago most of the comments were about the pile of leaves, why should this post be any different!! 😂😁😂

Looks like a baseball stitch to me. The first one looks like a "get it done stitch".

Your lucky if you only do it twice, seems like i am doing everything 3 or 4 times this time around.

A friend put me onto Wheel Skins steering wheel covers...best I've ever found or seen. Not cheap but excellent leather and perfect fit.

I have always said I didn’t learn all this stuff by doing it right the first time.
As for steering wheel cover….
Seems that I don’t need one because my hands are too numb to feel it after about twenty miles.
That one looks nice, Daze!
