So as you know my car has a 289 with a 5 speed and its 28 oz balance flywheel and just put it all new....My problem is I got a 302 explorer engine i wanna build to put in. Will I be ale to use my28 oz flywheel by just changing the front balancer or should I just get a short from my buddy that has the 28 oz

Definitely not. You need the correct 50oz blancer and flywheel. A stock 5.0 flywheel would work. That I actually do have, so let me know if you need it.

Ditto on TKO reply. You need 50 ounce flywheel.
Also, most are set up for 10.5” clutch, and your 289 flywheel is probably drilled for 10” clutch, so a new clutch may be in order.

i do not remember who's fly wheel i bought, it was a lightened unit, but not aluminum, it is 10. 5 wide and came with two weights, that you can bolt either one into, one being a 28 oz and the other 50 oz.

To give you a little good news, you should be able to use the hipo manifolds with the p heads...

Are you gonna need any machine shop work?!
If so....just have the assembly balanced.
Additional 150 bux or so.

My experience having 50 ounce to 28 ounce or vice-versa flywheel balance change done by machine shop has not been good. I have wound up with drilled out mess that looked like it would blow up at 3,000 rpm. Worth the money to just get the right flywheel rather than taking chances.

so what kind of problems am I gonna run into when putting my pullyes on front of my engine to run the factory A?C and power steering?
may not be worth the roller cam effort.

Use the Summit Racing balancer and appropriate aluminum pulley spacer for the 289 pulleys and it will all bolt up just like stock.

Drilling a 10.5" flywheel for 10 clutch might be an option. Had to have that done for the FE. Flywheel was 11" and clutch was 11.5. The shop charged me less that $50 to do it.

He's talking about the bolt pattern for the pressure plate. It was drilled for an 11" clutch and he had it redrilled to accept an 11.5".

One of the things to take care of is the bolt spacing on the harmonic balancer. Ford has both 3 & 4 bolt crank pullies. I have a balancer that comes with both, so I do not have to deal with it. It also came with a weight that would make the 28oz balance into a 50oz balance. It's been so long that I can't remember the maker.

I used the 289 model and it comes with three spacers for the different pulley offsets and can be used with 3 or 4 bolt pulley.
Summit also has 28 oz and 50 oz counter weights if you decide to change engine and remove for internal balance as well.
I figured this was good enough for a street driven car in my case.
I also recall an SFI rated ones as well.
The balancer is bare metal. So paint or clear if desired.

The friend I am getting engine from said he has a few 50 oz flywheels if I need one. I just need to figure out which balancer and spacer I need it is a 3 bolt pulley on it now and I have power steering and A/C

If you use the one piece fuel pump eccentric with the late model timing chain then the eccentric may hit the back of the timing chain cover.

The eccentric must match the timing chain sprocket. All the timing covers have same clearance.

He's going to have to use his old timing cover anyway or deal with drilling a dipstick hole and reverse water pump issues.

Use 289 cover, pulleys and custom balancer.
