Re: A 1968 GT-500 Story

My old one…
Never really liked the big block.
I still have an unused, brand new 68 GT500 hood that I bought but never installed.

Re: A 1968 GT-500 Story

I'll preface this by saying that I'm glad I still have my original car, BUT many years ago I could have traded it and $5k for a '68 GT500KR 4 speed with all the performance options.  I didn't have the $5k, and the bank of Dad said no dice.  I guess everything happens for a reason, but...

Yes, I sold it before covid hit. I lost track of exactly when I got rid of it

Bank of Dad … reminds me when I wanted to borrow money to buy a 427 Cobra and was told no way.  In the mid-80’s when resale prices for Cobras were reaching $1million, I said to my dad, see what we’d have now if you loaned me the money.  His response, “with you driving that car, you’d probably be dead by now”.   He had a point.

Working on a big block car ain't so bad. but you do need to get rid of the pent roof valve covers. They take up way more real-estate than they provide in looks.

Yeah, I think mine may have said something along those lines to me too.  I think my response was something like "You manged not to kill yourself in your SS396 El Camino at my age."  Still no dice, though I did get that hmmn sound that meant he'd acknowledged I made a valid point without actually giving me any credit for it.

Re: A 1968 GT-500 Story

When I was in high school I had an opportunity to buy at GT350H for $8k. The local branch of Bank of Dad denied that loan too.

Like the time I had a chance to buy a 70 Challenger   440 - 6pack for $5000!
I couldn't find a bank that would loan me the money.
When that 'thang' dropped back into 2nd gear AND all 3 carbs popped open!!!!!!..... violent best describes it.
Absolutely have both hands on the wheel.......
(yeah.........I'd probably be dead!)

In grade school my mom and another mom used to carpool to get us kids to school.  The other family's dad had worked for Chrysler in the '60s and '70s (there used to be a plant in Newark).  He had a '70 Challenger 440 6-pack 4 speed car in the garage and a '70 Charger 440 6 pack auto car that we got ferried to school in by the mrs.  His son eventually got the Challenger for his high school ride (thankfully I never had to compete with it because he was 4 years younger than me).

Re: A 1968 GT-500 Story

When I was younger and right out of high school I worked construction.  In the Ohio winters work would be slow.   While looking for parts to build my first mustang I ended up meeting a guy who at the time had 19 Shelby mustangs.  He had two big block Shelby cars that had matching bins or I should say the one had the next consecutive number.  One was black and the other was red.  Can’t recall if they 67 or 68 models.

I did help restore a 68 350 Shelby he sold at the Columbus swap meet one year.

He was a big collector as well.  Went through a divorce and she got her green with gold strip Hertz Shelby.  He hide almost all of the others because he hadn’t put them in his name yet so he came out ok.  Sadly he had a couple cars left and had passed away almost a year ago.  I heard his new wife was going to auction everything off but I never heard anything more.

Definitely not, and she was a TERRIBLE driver, so probably for the better.  We did spin out on some ice and tap a guard rail once.  Thanks to cars made from metal, with metal bumpers I don't think there was much damage to the car.
