was it leaking?

No sir I had leaks though up on the top drivers side windsheild corner. Lol. I removed the cowl I was wondering its state. Plus I hated seeing the flaking red oxide primer and white body over spray. I plan on sand blasting the cowl then maybe install one new hat. One looks iffy as of now. Then SpI epoxy primer the inside use some 2 part seam sealer and also paint the inside of the cowl. I also have pillar repair work that needs to be done. I needed to get the cowl out of the way. Also will probably cut out a small section on each cowl side to air in removing the outer pillars..

Thanks you she is coming along Ill probably get away with buying two new hats for the original cowl. One hat looks iffy. And since I need to clean under and around the old hats Mught as well removed them buy a set and replace as necessary. Will know more after I get to do some sand blasting the weather really hast cooperated the last week or so.

I bet there's a bunch of jealous 65-66 owners out there who wish they had your cowl "problems". Your cowl is cleaner than a Safeway chicken. Nice work.

Thank you. I was pretty sure after removing all under dash componets minus drivers side cowl vent. That the cowl looked to be in pretty good shape no holes that I could see by shining a light through cowl grille drain holes and through the interior side cowl vents. I never really liked the looks of the Red oxide primer and paint body color over spray that was delaminating that could be seen through the cowl grille. This was one big factor on why I also decided to remove the cowl. Now i plan on removing the other hat and then sandblasting the lower and upper cowl. Then ill use a wire wheel wire brush and some sand paper to britten up the steel to remove the samd blasting particals that get imbeaded in the steel from the blasting process. Then I will primer paint then finally seam seal. Also debating on using 2 part seam seal and using a small skip seam pattern with the sealer then mount the cowl top then clamp in place this would definitely be a great way to seal off the cowl. Then finally weld cowl in place after making sure it is clamped in place correctly.

Looks good, lots of work but worth the effort to ensure you won't be doing this again in the future. Good luck with the remaining project.

My thoughts exactly. Im glad I removed the upper ill need to repair the passenger side where the hat mounts. Sad part is for a set of hats and a repair section im in the repair parts almost as much as a new lower cowl. Plus I need to cut out a small section on each side of the lower cowl that or remove the lower as well then I can rove and repair the a pillars.

Just a side note:
If you ever install vintage air conditioning, the cowl and heater vents get blocked off. If that is in the cards for the future, just weld in a flat panel instead if a hat section.

Sorry to open up the can of worms.
Thank you for your post thats why I love The forum. ❤️ I was unaware that the factory cowl vents would need to be removed for aftermarket A/C. Also I have seen one kit dunno the brand but it eliminates the heater motor and gives you a block off plate. Is this the case with most aftermarket A/C units. Am I far better off going aftermarket A/c over stock A/c head unit with sanden compressor? What are some of the other updates come with a/c kits? And modifications required to install the kits?

As far as I can tell, all of the aftermarket systems are recirculate only. No provision to bring in or add fresh air, hence the block off plates they want you to screw over (under) the hats. I live in an area, like you, where bringing in fresh air is nice at certain times of the year so I miss the ability to bring in fresh air. I plan to re-install the left side vent on our 66 but with all the AC ducting, etc. it may be more trouble that it's worth.
If you are going to use a stock type "hang on" evaporator you can keep the stock heater and get fresh air from the right and left.

The CAA system I got for 68’s only required to block off the passenger side.

The Vintage Air system I installed in my 65 does indeed block off both OEM vents. However, one could leave the driver’s side vent installed, although some manipulation of the new A/C duct will be needed.
Further note, one can download the installation instructions from the Vintage website w/o purchasing the system … if you want to see what the installation involves.

Nice clean and detailed work.

The factory unit I installed on my 69 keeps both fresh air vents.

Main reason to use a modern ac system like Vintage or Classic is you get dehumidified defroster. If you just use an underdash ac unit, you still have the crappy factory defroster that only works by blasting hot air onto the windshield. Unlike Bullet, I live in Tx where it rarely gets under 95 degrees in the 9 months of summer, so we NEVER want to bring fresh hot air into the car. So, I guess your location does matter in your future plans.
Another suggestion or two:
Paint the underside of your cowl white or silver. It makes a huge difference when you are trying to see what you are doing working under the dash
Pack the cavity in your cowl with aluminum foil until you complete the paint work on the car’s exterior. It will keep sanding dust and overspray out of there, and you can pull it out through the louvers once you are done painting.

I live in Salt lake city so we get all seasons here. Frost windsheild and snow later in the year as early ad november most years. Mild winters

Thank you RTM. Any recommendations for A/C system ? I really prefer the look of stock style vents they just look cooler then then new style ones offered in new kits IMO. Also any suggestions that would be nice for some pipe dimensions to brace the inside of my car. I cant remember what you told me you went through on your car. Im going with a full floor pan it worth it in the end the original could be saved but time effort it need to come out or a good side section of the front floor would need to come out. I plan on cleaning out the floor supports. I plan on removing my Inner Rocker Panels and I need to address my Firewall. Shes coming along my mistake on not adding a zip tie or some bracket to hold the cross over tube that goes head to head on the compressor think thats whats its called? 🤪 its on a Two stage pump anyways the tube rubbed up against the pulley unaware to me for a short time, set me back twice in the build. Guess I should try copper and flae ends. I replaced the one that originally came on the unit. Which was a stainless braid hose. Now ill have to buy a new replacement again. Whoops.

I agree the aftermarket vents look terrible. I especially hate the center vents in my 69. Hopefully someday I can find an original center vent. Then will have to buy an A/C dash pad. Why can’t Vintage Air just do it right?
Offline
I haven’t gotten to the AC yet but I was leaning toward Classic Air because they have a location just North of me and I have read good things about them. Since I bought the CVF bracket system it came with the AC compressor. I had previously reached out to Classic Air and made sure I could use this compressor.
My plan was to buy the AC parts next month but I just had to replace the AC compressor in my 2014 focus. So I dropped $900 fixing it. Only good thing is I now have a vacuum pump. I had the gauges but I had never bought the pump.
