Have You Guys Seen These?

Not sure how I ended up on their mailing list, but got an advertisement for SpeedMaster today. The heads *seem* to be a nice budget alternative for folks putting together a mild combo, but I have zero experience or knowledge of them.

Re: Have You Guys Seen These?

I have no experience with those heads but I wouldn’t be afraid to use on a very mild street build.  I wouldn’t run them with high compression or lift.  Most cheaper heads are not too bad.  It’s the components that are cheapest weak link.   I have seen Chinese head’s collapse under high compression.  Meaning the head bolts became loose and couldn’t pull the studs out of the heads because the head moved so much it pinched the studs.     I would google them.  There are some knowledgeable people out there.

Re: Have You Guys Seen These?

Looks like the solid roller heads have the stiffer springs....butt NOT the smaller chambers.

Just fyi for everyone:   speed master is pro comps new name.  Has been for a while.   I find it interesting that more people don't know that.  I guess they ran a successful changeover.

If multiple things can go wrong, the one that will go wrong will be the one that causes the most damage.

Re: Have You Guys Seen These?

Cast in China from suspect materials.  I'd buy used American made heads that needed to be rebuilt long before I'd even consider anything made in China.  I have a Chinese cast head on my 6.0 Diesel in my F250, and it was fine until it filled a cylinder with water.  Should have bought a Ford reman.  Saving $800 ended up costing me a LOT more.

Not sure if the name change includes a product improvement, but I had a Pro Comp HEI distributor on my 351W.  First, the fit of the housing to the block was cut for a 289-302 engine, and Pro Comp supplied a ‘shim’ to fit the wider diameter of the 351 distributor.  Then, after about 2000 miles the car started to run very rough, the timing was jumping around a lot.  I pulled the distributor and found the roll pin holding the gear had worn the gear hole oblong and was about to fall out.  I replaced it with a MSD unit.
I also had Pro Comp roller rocker arms, and was advised to change them out due to failure history.  Based on my experience with the distributor, I changed them out.
Just saying.

Re: Have You Guys Seen These?

Yep.Pro Comp has a BAD rep......Although
Chad Spiers( I tink) sez he buys them and COMPLETELY goes through them to make 'em reliable. (for a PRICE!)
Sooooo buy from another chinese source and hope the quality is better...may be the answer.
(you don't REALLY think there are USA made heads available do ya?! )
