There are plenty of bad @$$ six cylinders out there. Domestically the Ford 300 (or 4.9) with EFI was a monster stock. I've always wondered what you could do with one if you decided to modify it. Toyota has the 2JZ (many making 1,000HP or more with mods). Nissan has the RB26DETT (many making 1,000HP or more with mods). BMW had a the M88/1 they used in the M1 supercar. Naturally aspirated it made 273HP from 3.5 liters. They scaled it down for the S14 by lopping off 2 cylinders to make it a 4 cylinder, which went into the original M3 making 192HP from 2.3 or 2.5 liters.
I have to throw out some love for Diesel 6s too. Cummins 6BT 12 valve with the Bosch inline pump is THE standard for Diesel performance. Plenty of street driven ones making 1,000HP and 2,000 lbs/ft. In pulling and racing there are guys north of 3,000HP.

Back in the day, NHRA had the class, H/MP, that many ran the Ford 300ci, and it did pretty well. One local guy ran one in a Henry J, and then switched to a Maverick, and raced for many years.

When I was in high school they was a maverick that had a built 6 cyl in it. I don’t recall any of the details now but I recall the word was it was pretty quick.

My understanding is that the guy who designed the 300 for Ford was also the same guy who had designed the I6 Hudson used in the Hornet. Had Hudson persisted the next iteration of their I6 was going to go to OHV to get around the breathing issues that engine had due to the convoluted path the air had to take owing to the flathead design. Even then they could get 1HP/cube out of those engines in race trim. With OHV it could have easily been the first affordable car built with over 1HP per cubic inch. I've often wondered if V8 performance would have been as dominant as it ended up being in the '60s if Hudson had a car like that in the mid '50s. I mean, keep pulling the thread. Eventually they go to three 2 barrels, maybe an alloy head, possibly an alloy block. One of the guys who knew a ton about airflow at that time was Smokey Yunick who already worked with Hudson. Man, what could have been?!
