I made some progress on my chassis jig for my 65 Mustan

Hello everyone I made some progress on my chassis jig for 1965 mustang Coupe. I purchased a few sets of sicssor jacks. One set of four of the jacks will mount under the jig raising it up off the casters or mount in place of the casters. I purchased the other sets of scissor jacks to mount on top of the jig and then slide under the cars floor flange. Now I should be able to level out the jig, roll the car over the top of the jig. Then mount my  scissor jack mounts to the jig to then be able to raise the car from the floor flange. Then I will be able to mount the front and rear chassis mount brackets. I want to have the vertical uprights mount to the front LCA mount and the front rear leaf spring mount locations. I have downloaded the 1965 Ford chassis drawing to my phone. Im curious  though how long to make the mounts for the LCA and the rear front Leaf spring mount? I have no idea how long to make them. Should use the rear vertical mounts I cut out and then raise or lower the front accordingly?  I have my car set up still on wheels which I need to remove  when I get my other scissor  jacks in  the mail.  Pretty soon ill get my car mounted so I can get some work done on it. I have parts gallore for it.

Re: I made some progress on my chassis jig for my 65 Mustan

I changed my mind and am going to use a flat plate and 2" square that I have cut out. Then ill use the 2" square thats under the front leaf spring bolts and use it instead for my front mount to go under the LCA.

That is a big project!  Good luck going forward.
I'll note that I find it interesting that the front floorboards look original.

I know I need more cut off discs , sanding discs, preparation discs, and probably some more blast media. I accidentally let my car get some surface rusr before ai got Epoxy on some areas. Its also taken Utah forever to heat up to decent out side. Now that my jig can be leveled hopefully soon I can get my car on my jig so I can start really working on it.  I need to drill out my spot weld on my floor remove it repair it for installation. Ans also remove the inner rockers so I can clean out the inside of the rockers then I can reinstall the floor. Its in really good shape I hate to scrap the floor. Thats why im thinking three patches isnt so bad. The entire passenger side is solid.

Indeed they are except the drivers side infront of the floor riser. The patch was done by a friends dad years ago now I get to remove his nice lap over the old floor. Lol

Re: I made some progress on my chassis jig for my 65 Mustan

Alight so Amazon fairy delivered my sicssor jacks for my jig. I have now welded on six plates to the bottom of the jig. I have so far 4 custom sicssor jacks that have the same soze plate as whats weld on the jig welded on to the tops of the sicssor  jacks. Now I have the jacks bolted in place under the jig. The sicssor  jacks I purchased are smaller then the casters so the casters can be left in place and the scissor  jacks can be lowered. I also left top plate on the jacks so it roates. Or rather the jack can still be roated 360 degrees. I do have a laser level and tripod I was thinking of using to level the jig out now. Or Get a trusty level from lowes. They sell i think a 9 or a 10ft level for around a $100. Thought it might help out leveling the jig since its 15ft long 43" wide. What do yall think would be tbest way to check for level? I do have two short levels I can use. For the ends. I was thinking that long level maybe nice

Wow! Just gotta say that that is quite the undertaking. Quite the undertaking. Personally, considering my sheetmetal skills, I would have to rivet it together like an aircraft - as my welding capabilities and lack of equipment would preclude me even considering it. Good for you for attempting it. Keep us appraised as you "hot glue" it together.

I doubt I have that many more tools then people here on the forum. I own 5 tool boxes 4   42" tool boxes one of them has a peg board that slides out the back off one of the boxes that holds my calmps shears and tin snips. I also have two smaller mechanics chests. Plus a 52" craftsman work bench. beside from those just my welder and a few sanders and grinders sand blaster and gss air compressor and small mechanic vise.
Some tools id like would be an EZ hammer basically looks like a pneumatic palm nailer thats been modified to hold hammer heads and punches. Would be awesome for helping with body work. I also would like to try a Ray sheleen if I spelt that correctly. Its a metal disc that people use to grind over a panel and it knocks down any highs in a panel and shrinks them. Havent tried it but I have been told about them a few times. A small slip beed roller would be neat. My buddy modified a eastwood roller and made it electric and modified the toller to mount in a vise at The Mustang Restoration shop I was working at. I would like to add one of these tools to my collection as well. Sides from that a Drill press and a lathe would be neat to own as well.

Re: I made some progress on my chassis jig for my 65 Mustan

I called over a buddy he brought over an extra level and helped me out leveling my chasis jig. Helped out tons having two levels as well as two sets of eyes. I now am able to back my car out of the garage. Then I can drive my car over the top of the chassis jig. The rear end I think will now clear the chassis jig with it being lower. If not ill have to remove the rear end and figure out some casters to mount in the back of the car to finish rolling the car over the top of the jig and into place. All I have lfet to  make are my vertical uprights for my attachment points. Next part will be fun removing the rear end, as well as all front steering and suspension components. I cant wait to get my car on the jig. Im starting a new Job tomorrow as a machine shop welder so we will see how much go I have left when I get gome tomorrow.
Does anyone here use a welder hooked up to a generator? I have my 141 miller and I would like to run it off a generator.

Not any more butt.....in a previous life
I worked with a welder/generator unit (using the welder function)
The idle would increase as soon as I struck-an-arc....butt-chew know that already.
Never posed any negative issues as far as quality of weld.
So long as the generator maintains proper voltage(assuming its large enough) to the Miller....I can't see an issue.

Re: I made some progress on my chassis jig for my 65 Mustan

Aso I tried backing up my car out of the garage and over the top of my chassis jig to see if the rear end would clear. I thought it just might clear as the sicssor jacks are alot about 2" lower if I remember correctly. I believe I ordered 5" casters but with its swivel bracket turns into 6" overall height for the casters. I will edit later if the measurements are slightly different. On regarding the rear end clearing the chassis jig it only cleared the first brace and then will hit the next brace. The rear end center is about 1/4" from clearing the next braces on the chassis jig.  However once the car is over the chassis jig in its new stationary postion the rear end would clear as there are no braces welded in under the rear ends location. Im debating now what would be my easiest way next to getting my car over the chassis jig. I bought some extra 2x2 1/8" wall square tube for my vertical uprights for my chassic jig  and to use up the rest of the 2x2 I was thinking of using it and building caster mounts that would mount in the front rear leaf spring mounts. Another option I thought of was to build a slight ramp for the tires to roll on, so the rear end will clear the Chassis jig braces. I realize the other option is to barelly notch the braces and weld back in the top. I dont really wanna go this route.

Yes sir. Not small jobs either. The idler pulley this other welder is welding a bushing in is about 7ft tall good 18" thick its for Cennicot Copper Mine dump truck engines. We also re build their dump truck shocks as well.  We also do work for Geneva Rock dump trucks as well its awesome. Thank you for the Good Luck. So far three days in I really like it alot.

I have some 1x1 0.78 beleive they are 6fts or 7fts Cant remember exactly. I know they fit in 2015 mustang lol. Yes im sorry to say my other mustang is seeing some stuff go through  its trunk I thought id never put in it. Monday the metal supply is open which is a plus for some business its a Holiday in Utah  Pioneer Day. I luck out a little and have the day off from work. Im going to go to the metal supply and see how much their expaneded metal goes for. I notice they have 48" x 120" 3/4 hole raise expanded metal. Sheets. Dunno if they can cut them into 10" x 10ft strips that would make my life a lil easier not having to cut down the whole sheet. Usually they can cut most anything there. I dunno how much they charge for direct delivery but thats maybe an option. Ill have to also check and see with my brother if he has some extra 2x12s on his truck he might have a few I could use and it would be cheap. Im just  going through the wait time between paychecks from switching to a Career.

I need to get going on my truck project. Maybe now with a paying career. Ill have some extra income. Hopefully then I can put some money into fixing my truck. Only needs an engine. But then theres the conversion parts needed as well. And all the stuff that goes along with that. I met this guy that owns a local Philadelphian Cheese steak Restaurant. He was telling me about his truck and his group of friends all with Square body's. Alot are converted to LS with dual tanks thats how I wanna go. Theres just not much information on going this way.

Re: I made some progress on my chassis jig for my 65 Mustan

So my Brother had two 2x12 x16 and two 2x12 scraps I was able to use these as a ramp for my car to roll over the top of my chassis jig. I now have the jig level car is centered over the top of the chassis jig. I now how to finish building my mounts that hold on my four scissor jacks that are pictured under my rockers. These will lift my car up to level then I can figure out my mounts for the bod to the chassis  jig. I have the bases to the mounts just havent made any vertical posts yet. The posts that mount to body or chassis and then to the jig may have to wait. I dont have my own personal drill press yet. Thats one tool I do not have that I really need for the verticals so I can make sure I drill the holes square.

Re: I made some progress on my chassis jig for my 65 Mustan

I got my car on my chassis jig. I havent gotten the bolt holes drilled for the scissor jack supports. I kinda got pooped out drilling holes. So I rolled out my welder and tacked on the sicssor jacks to their mounts and tacked on the mounts to the chassis jig. I then tried raising the scissor jacks im getting a little bit of flex on the scissor jacks. I have a set of four RV levelers that I was going to return to Amazon because they were to tall for my jig. Now I found a use for them even if temporary. I used the four RV scissor levelers and placed them under my scissor jack mounts that are under the rocker flange on each corner. Now ive noticed that my car slightly got off set to my jig so it not completely centered ill have to dr that. I had it centered yesterday. I just had to roll the car forward to geting to be able to spot the mounts on the Jig. My front end isnt alligned yet I need to buy a tie rod puller to get the outer tie rod loose so I can screw it in the sleeve more. I had just unscrewed the right tie rode sleve so my car wasnt toed in or out weird. I must have pushed my car on a slight angle when I went to weld on mount.

Re: I made some progress on my chassis jig for my 65 Mustan

I need to build my vertical up rights that the body and chassis will mount to. Right now I have my mohnts for my scissor jacks tack weelded on the chassis jig. I have scissor jacks tack welded in place on the mounts. I habe four RV levelers under the found scissor jack mounts that are umder the rockers. The one mount Im. Getting some downward flex movemnt. I have a Rv leveler under this one scissor jack as a helper. I pulled out the rear axle today as well. That wasnt to hard. Used some 2x12s under the wheels dropped the rear mounts and rolled the rear end right out of place after the shackles werre un bolted. I barely had to lift the Rear end over the ends of the leaf springs it worked out awesome.
