My brake project on the 65 was almost finished today. All I needed to do was bolt on the new tandem master cylinder. I absolutely could not get the bolt started on the driver side of the master cylinder. I went through several gyrations of removing the master cylinder to make sure the bolt would actually thread in the insert, as well as running a tap in the insert to be certain it was usable. I finally wound up cross-threading the bolt slightly, so pulled the master cylinder again to retap it.
Of course, I then managed to break the tap off in the hole.
Next, removed instrument cluster, vent cable and parking brake handle. Undid the speedo cable, pulled the cluster out. Unbolted the brake pedal support under the dash, spent half an hour removing the pedal support.
On the workbench, I removed the threaded insert with the broken tap in it and welded on a flanged nut for the master cylinder bolt attachment.
All worn out from all that frustration, the reinstallation will be done tomorrow, hopefully without additional drama.
A job that should have taken thirty seconds expanded to fill four or five hours, plus I have to figure out where all the instrument cluster wires go since I removed them all in my haste to remove the cluster.

This might help in the future. There are wrenches meant to remove broken taps. I have this type:
Worked well on a tap I broke chasing threads on some fender mounting bolts on my WRX.

MS - I guess many of us have been there, done that, I know I have.
Rudi - I got the 'brake' comment, good one.

It takes 'stuff' like this ^^^^^ to make you think " GAWD...I just thought I was gett'in good at this stuff "!
Very humbling experience indeed.

I hate when that happens.

It is all back together and we now have brakes! My neighbor, who is slimmer and left-handed, volunteered to go under the dash to put the brake pedal pivot back together. Now I have a brake pedal with a bushing not installed. Oh, well. It works for now, and will get redone when I redo the entire dash after stripping the car to bare bones.
Objective was met to have brakes working before my surgery. Next is new gas tank and fill the tranny so hopefully it can move under its own power.

Ive had my fair share of those kind of days. This past Sunday, I swear I spent more time going in circles than I did getting anything done.

I made it - it's 24"x17". I took the pdf to my local office supply store and they printed it on their large format printer. I bought a cheap frame and stuck it on the wall in the garage. I have a couple others I did the same way. I put the master files for all 3 of them (in .tiff and .pdf) on my Google Drive and you should be able to download them from there (let me know if that doesn't work). :-)

In Steve's case, you can pretty much say that every third or fourth bolt will break. He is trying to reinforce his reputation when it comes to tightening bolts.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
