Adding return port to Saginaw pump

I decided to add a return port to the Saginaw PS pump instead of adding Tee to the return line on the Hyde boost setup.   I decided to add it to the rear center of the cover.  The reason for this approach is I’ve read that the placement of the Tee can cause issues with feed back when applying the brakes and turning at the same time.  Plus I think this will provide a cleaner installation.

Plus the return port on the PS pump was almost a 180 coming out of the back and pointing to the front of the car.  I heated that tube up and bent it to a position that should provide an almost straight return from the rack and pinion unit.

The fitting I need will be here tomorrow.

Re: Adding return port to Saginaw pump

Nice!  I know it is harder these days to find the hydroboost cans that had the 2nd return port.  80’s GM diesels had them.

Re: Adding return port to Saginaw pump

They are available on Rock Auto in “ham can” and “round”.

Take a look at 1985 C30 with diesel.

Re: Adding return port to Saginaw pump

This pump is the one that comes with the CVF system so I’m kinds of stuck using it.  I agree if you are purchasing the PS pump as z separate item then you have options.  As you can the one pump has a return port that faces the front if the engine like mine did.

I’m using a 6AN bulkhead fitting.   I’ve see pictures of return ports higher up, on the side and in the location I’m going with.

Re: Adding return port to Saginaw pump

Well, if you want that bling anyway.  A Saginaw pump is a Saginaw pump otherwise.  The only difference between applications is the pressure relief valve, which can be swapped and/or modified with shims to alter the pressure (Borgeson sells a kit to do this (899001)).

I think those ports face forward because GM used a cooler, so the return was coming from the front.

GM had hydro boost brakes on diesels too.

All Diesel I've ever sen use hydroboost.  Diesels have no throttle plate because they are throttled by fuel, not air, and thus make no vacuum to run a typical vacuum booster.

Re: Adding return port to Saginaw pump

Another benefit is if one looses engine power you have some breaking power reserved in the hydro boost.

Re: Adding return port to Saginaw pump

I ordered a 90 degree elbow which should work out well.  The 45 I had points the hose right at the header.

Re: Adding return port to Saginaw pump

Jose’s 65 has the forward facing return line. I liked it because it made for a neat routing of the return hose along the frame rail.
The pump on
My 65 faces straight back towards the exhaust manifold, a bad setup. I would prefer it to point forward or straight down. (Borgeson box)

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

If you look you can see it’s pretty much a straight shot for the return line from the steering rack to the pump, this is how it fits after I bent the tube.   But you bring up a good point MS, our setups are most likely completely different because I’m running the MII front end.

I think the CVF kit also kicks the PS pump outward a bit giving more room to get to the back of the pump.   Like every thing I touch on this build, it turns into project that takes ten times longer to complete than I had hoped.  Everything has to be modified.
