What fan controller is preferred on a Mustang using the Contour fan on a Mustang with A/C
Any advice on installing Contour dual fan?

I have a single 16" Spal fan and the DCC FK-45 controller. Works well for me.

I've used and really liked the controller from AutoCoolGuy. Only downside to me was that it was bulky, but it performed flawlessly in the Texas heat.

I simply built my own using a couple relays and a thermostatic switch. Granted, that's for a single fan, and a dual fan could be more complex depending on how you want the fans to work. I would assume the Contour fans in the OE application are staged so one comes on first, then the other if needed, and definitely one or possible both come on automatically when the AC is switched on.

I put a contour fan in a first gen S10 truck with a SBC because there was no room for the preferred mechanical fan and proper shroud. Installation of the fan was as simple as trimming a bit of plastic on the shroud and fabbing up a couple of brackets.
I went through 2 failed attempts to properly control the fan (including an early DCController) before arriving at the solution that worked flawlessly until the truck was sold a couple years later. I used a Volvo 2 speed fan relay from a pick & pull, and a 2 speed temp switch for a VW/Audi, initially mounted in the lower radiator hose but later moved to a bung to the radiator tank when the old, cheap eBay rad leaked. I found the idea for the combo of OEM Volvo & VW/Audi parts on the internet.

I also used the 2 speed Volvo fan controller. Tried using the VW thermo switch but was not happy with its responsiveness.. Found the BWM thermo switch much more accurate/responsive than the VW switch. I originally used the Taurus fan but upon changing the original rad to an aluminum rad, the Taurus fan shroud didnt fit correctly. Fabed up an aluminum shroud and used the Volvo fan. Very happy with the results.

Ive been using Multispeed Controllers and Accessories unit for the last 23 years and never had any issues with it. If I ever had any questions the guy always emails be back within 24 hours.

From what I’ve read on other web sites that is the bestselling contour controller.

Are the Contour fans a two-speed fan? Some controllers mention this. Some don’t.
One controller a friend is using starts one fan at full speed, then the second one at full speed after 10 seconds
Obviously, I am at step zero on learning curve here.

Contour fan is a 2 speed item. IIRC both fans run at both speeds if you connect to the factory connection. There is a resistor on the shroud that gets you the low speed.
They draw a lot on startup. The nice ($$$) DCController starts them softly to reduce the draw. They move a LOT of air, and are quite loud on high.

Not sure I understand both fans running at both speeds? Clarify?

When using the built in connections on the shroud, when your controller calls for low speed, then both fans turn on at low speed. When your controller calls for high speed, both fans operate at high speed (as opposed to one fan being the low speed fan and the other fan being a high speed fan of the dual fan setup).

I used a 93 taurus fan and then I upgraded to a Denali fans when I installed a new radiator. Kept the controller though. Has AC hook up too.

I'm using a 95 single fan. I found out the aftermarket replacement motors are single speed only, possibly true for a Taurus replacement as well. Contour, I'd be checking, if they are not original.
Good luck to your "friend".

MS, are you going to install an electric fan in one of your "Friends"cars????

I'm gunna guess it's for Jose.

Initially for Jose’ s 65. But, the CVF guys are telling me I will likely never get water pumps to live on my 69 331 with their Wraptor setup unless I do away with the mechanical fan.

I like this setup due to simplicity and use of OEM factory components.

Some great info on that video, thanks Dan

I will assume you have already upgraded to a higher output alternator. I ran the Contour fans on my 68 for a while, but I spent more time starring at the temp gauge than the windshield always waiting for the fans to start.
I will be the first to admit that I did NOT have a decent controller, and I was bringing both fans on at the same time, the end rush on those fan motors was a lot. A single belt on the alternator would not hold without squealing. I had a by-pass switch to manually start the fans just in case, and I used it more than not. I will say those fans are loud, but they move a ton of air. A good variable speed controller would be the answer, I just got frustrated and went back to the mechanical.
At times I wish I would have put the time in to do it correctly, I should have asked you guys some questions, I did like the way the motor revved without the mechanical fan, my clutch is too tight.
I will be interested to see what system you put together, I still have the fans and would consider them when I add the AC this spring. Then I would be upgrading the alternator as well, It just never ends.
Hope everyone is staying warm, 7 degrees when I started the truck this morning, I am getting way too old for this, and still about 5 years form retirement.

kardad – just a note on the alternator belt. I have the original V-belt system on my Mustang. I couldn’t get the belt tight enough to stop the alternator belt from squealing occasionally no matter how tight I made the belt. I changed to a 1/2” wide belt as I thought the OEM 3/8’ wide belt may be bottoming in the v-groove. Since the change I haven’t had any belt squealing issues. Just saying.

This is what is great about all of the different experience on here. I spent all of the time swapping to a dual belt pulley on the alternator and WP to deal with the squeal and never considered a wider V-belt to bite better.
If I had only presented the issue back when,

Hell, I never thought of the dual belts until I swapped to a serpentine belt.

My 93 Taurus fan was a two speed fan. I just hooked it up using the high speed only.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
