Floor pan coatings ?

I’ve started replacing the floor pans in the 67 Mustang. I’m almost done taking everything down to bare metal. What product is best for coating the floor pans inside the car? Deltron epoxy primer? POR15? Something from The Eastwood? Something else?

Re: Floor pan coatings ?

I've always used ppg dp90 two part epoxy primer.  I was taught this almost 30 years ago and still use it on all my bare metal and to seal up bodywork and such.

I'll be spraying on my truck bed cover tomorrow followed by a white base then color and clear.

Re: Floor pan coatings ?

POR15 doesn't really work on clean metal.  Its a rust converter, so it really only bonds well to rusty metal.  Its great for metal where there is surface rust all over, but its not to prevent rust.

DP90 is pretty much the gold standard.

Holy smokes! It’s also the price of gold!

Re: Floor pan coatings ?

I personally haven't used it, because it's not available in Oz, Spi epoxy primer seems to have a good reputation. I'd use it if I could get it.

Re: Floor pan coatings ?

Sealed my bed cover with a coat of DP epoxy primer to base coat.  I was able to remove the little guy that landed in my fresh clear coat.   Lol

I have, hovering around $3,700/ounce.

Re: Floor pan coatings ?

I've been using this product on the Falcon. It's an Aussie product and they do ship. I wished I'd discovered it when I did the Mustang floors. It applies really well, gets in all the gaps and two coats is usually enough I've found.
Having dealt with my fair share of rust over the decades, I tend to go over the top with rust protection, so I also did two coats of brush on black enamel epoxy, over the top of the product shown below.

Re: Floor pan coatings ?

I coated mine with MasterCoat Silver.  There used to be a guy on another mustang forum named Pete's Ponies that swore by the stuff.

SPI has excellent products and is used by many high end shops. On top of that the company has excellent customer service and is not owned by one of the giant conglomerations. The owner, who is retired, still answers calls to his cell phone, how cool is that?

Re: Floor pan coatings ?

I painted mine without primer, using only Rustoleum Satin Black. That was in 2010 when I installed new fronts and one rear pan. They still look just like when I did them.
You don’t have to get too anal or spend a lot of money to make the car do the job it originally was intended to do.
Put the money where it will make a difference in what the car will do for you.

We don’t have rust problems here in Texas, and the car will be kept indoors the rest of its life. If you did nothing to the interior of the floors, they will still last a long time.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Re: Floor pan coatings ?

Very good point MS.  It's definitely easy to get caught up in product hype and overthink things.

I use to spray rustoleum on axles but I would add an acrylic hardener to it.  I've also sprayed clear coat over epoxy and it looks great.

Re: Floor pan coatings ?

I've been usually this lately on my metal items that our outside as my first coat.
Here in the winter my engine and underneath the car will rust just sitting from the moisture in the air.
