Its official I have lost my mind

Here we have a typical Ford power steering to water pump stud kit. Replacements of these three bolts can be had for about $15.

Every fastener on my 393 is stainless so of course I purchased 5/16 and 3/8 bolts in stainless (about $10) chucked them up in the lathe and cut a 30° into each head face so when put end to end there was a place to fill with weld, took it to a welder so they could be TIGed together, ($40) then brought it home and proceeded to spend about two hours machining them to have the correct. “head“ thickness and the proper hex shape. So I’m into these studs for at least three hours and at least $50 and I could’ve purchased them in regular steel for $15. And did I mention once the power steering bracket is in place you basically can’t see anything except for a small section of the 3/8 head sticking out. As I was telling Glen about this it occured to me I could’ve simply used the steel bolts and gotten some nice stainless acorn nuts and completely covered them.

If it isn't broken...modify it anyway! http://www.DazeCars.com https://galaxieforum.boardhost.com

Re: Its official I have lost my mind

Pretty sure that's called a rabbit hole. You ain't the only one doing stuff like that where you are the only one who knows about it. Unless you post it online of course.

Re: Its official I have lost my mind

This I actually completely understand.  I used all ARP stainless fasteners on my 331 too.  If application specific bolts weren't available I found ARP sells generic sized fasteners in packs.  The problem was that the Edlebrock intake came with cheap silver zinc plated fasteners, and I wasn't having it.  The lengths I needed were both longer and odd, so I contacted ARP to see about having some made (they can do that).  Well, I wasn't going to spend $500 on intake bolts, so I came up with a work around.  I bought some generic ARP stainless bolts in the right size and thread to where I could cut the threads off one bolt and the head off another and achieve the correct length.  I ground the sections to be welded on a taper, and used some 316L wire in my MIG to joint them.  Once cooled I ground the welds smooth and they look like they came that way (just about I didn't bother to polish the shanks you won't see anyway).  I figure the torque on these is so low there's zero danger of a failure.

Bet you enjoyed doing it.  Sometimes taking the long way around the lake is the best thing you can do :-)

Re: Its official I have lost my mind

Sounds like some of the crap I do sometimes.

Yep, let’s replace some good old Ford grade 8 studs with some welded-up grade 2 stainless…

This is what makes this hobby so much fun.
