Mustang work waiting on the cable guy.

I had a couple of small things not finished on the mustang so while waiting on the cable guy I worked on the mustang.  Cable guy is 2.5 hours behind schedule.  Lol

I finished clearance the T5 shifter boot bezel and painted the top of it all black so you could see the difference in the thickness where it was silver to black. If I recall it's for a 70 model Mustang. I pushed the column closer to the dash by 1.5".  Much better position and a little easier to get in and out over the roll bar.

Yesterday I spent a lot of time working on a shifter boot idea.  I started this a long time ago.  Had a buddy 3D print some bezel pieces but his printer couldn't go any longer.  So I had to notch the back of the w-brake mount.  Mother in law will sew the boot for me.  I had to come up with an idea that allowed me to flip it inside out to sew it.  My first idea wouldn't do that.

I had to add red loctite to the silver shifter handle bolt.  Darn thing fell out this past Thursday.

Funny how I get it running good and now I want to finish all the little things.  Time to order my horns.  lol

Re: Mustang work waiting on the cable guy.

Regarding the shifter handle to the T5 transmission.  I’m using a Hurst shifter handle and the bolt holes in the handle are quite a bit larger than the bolts that hold it in place.  I couldn’t get the two bolts tight enough to stop the shifter from loosening.  I made bushings to make up the gap, and used longer bolts and installed a Nylock nuts on the back side to keep it tight and from moving.  The Nylock nuts may not be needed, but I wanted to be sure.

I have bushings in mine as well.  My shifter is a two piece. The base handle hasn't come loose yet, just the handle where it's adjustable.

Re: Mustang work waiting on the cable guy.

The factory shifter bolts had threadlocker on them.

I bought that shifter handle new from somewhere and it came with rubber bushings in those holes.  I assume they were there to provide more isolation between the shifter handle and the transmission.

Probably, as Ford used a rubber isolator on the factory levers.  I have always run Pro 5.0 shifters, so no rubber, no oversize holes, and no multi piece shift lever.  Simplicity is reliable IME.  If the angle wasn't right, lever wasn't right, etc. I would just heat, bend, fab, and modify.  I have their shifters in my '67, my '89 GT, and my '86 IROC (swapped to a T56).  I've yet to have an issue with any of them.  Though I will say, beware the aftermarket shifter cup bushings.  I did have one of those fail.  I started running bronze bushings because finding legit Tremec ones is hard.  AMP Manufacturing makes bronze ones.

Re: Mustang work waiting on the cable guy.

Mine is a pro 5.0 shifter as well.  I had to look up pictures to see what I had.  Came with the T5 when I bought.

I can only guess the Ring Brothers shifter I bought has the larger mounting holes so one could use the stock rubber insulator.  The shifter came with bronze bushings so it could be a solid mount.  The part of the shifter that bolts to the pro 5 shifter has not given me any issues.  I did add blue loctite with lock nuts to it.  I never thought to add loctite to the pivot bolt mount.  It threads into the handle itself so I should have known better when I installed it.   Most likely I found a shifter handle position and drove to make sure I liked the location and just never thought about it after that.
