Was just finishing up the 393 so I could put it on the engine run stand and break it in when I hit an "issue" One of the carb studs was not going in well so I decided to run a tap down the hole. Not wanting to get metal shavings in my engine build I took the extra precaution to tape off the carb opening. Being that it was taped off and "shavings proof" I figured that chasing all fore stud holes was a good idea and did just that. After chasing them I hit them with compressed air to blow the shavings out. First three holes went great with the expected cloud of aluminum particles erupting from the hole. Forth hole not so much, no eruption and a totally different sound. To my horror that hole and been drilled completely into the runner and I had just blown aluminum shavings into the motor. I pulled the intake and cleaned up the particles from the 4 and 7 ports on the heads. Intake valve on 4 was closed but the intake valve on 7 was OPEN 🤬 An endoscope showed that as feared aluminum bits had been blown into the cylinder. 
I spent a couple hours making an adapter to hook a small hose to a vacuum and attempted to suck the particles out but had no luck. I gave up decided to fix the issue correctly and took the motor back apart to clean the cylinder out properly. 3.5 hours later and $80 worth of gaskets poorer I had the engine back to where it was before I decided to chase a couple threads.

Hey Day - my Dad was a doer and his mantra was the only way to not make mistakes is to not do anything. Similarly, on a BMW engine build I was documenting along the way on a Bimmer forum... I noticed in a photo that I'd installed one of the straight 6 pistons backwards. The eyebrows in the pistons are asymmetrical. Had I not posted the photo, it would have remained. AAAAAAGGGGHHH!!! Off came the pan, new gasket - out came the piston and one time use bolts. Oy.
You are going to love the torque that 3.85" arm will provide.

That doesn't sound so bad. I'm sure it was frustrating at the time but you did fix the issue and got to spend some creaative thinking time inventing stuff so you wouldn't have to take the engine apart.
These sorts of things always put me in mind of the dialog in Young Frankenstein:
Frederick: "What a filthy job!"
Igor: "Could be worse"
Frederick: "How?"
Igor: "Could be raining." {crack of thunder and downpour)

Your better than me. I think when I seen the valve open on 7, I'd drop the tools and grab a bottle. Tomorrows got to be a better day. Hope the rest is all down hill!

That was tough, and correct, decision that had to be made. I would think we’ve all done something similar and needed to walk away for a few minutes to help realize what the right thing to do. Good luck going forward.

Ooohhhh good idear. You forgot 21.5 freeway MPG doing 75-80 mph, with a few bursts to 90+ to get around left lane monitors. 😁

It is for sure fun but some days are way better then others. This motor build has been one of my slowest projects ever. I have never spent so much tome putting things together and taking them apart repeatedly. Mostly that was checking quality fitment, but still it has been a pain.
