I've looked into options for adding a usb plug/port in the cigarette lighter location on and off for well over a year. A few days ago I got a break got idea to try and mount the tab plug into the lighter knob itself. Of course I'll figure a way to modify the assembly to accept the plug and keep a stock looking lighter setup. I'll mill a slot in the end of the knob and tunnel the wire through the middle of it all. It won't be that straight forward but I'm pretty confident I can make this work. May even be a market for such an idea.
The redline in the picture on the knob is where I want to mount the usb end. I've already bought a plug end and DC 12v to 5v. I'll bench test it all before I put it in the mustang. Just need time to start on it while I'm painting my truck project. lol

That's a cool idea.

I would be interested if you end up making more that one

I've already been thinking ahead on a way to kind of mass produce them. But I need to figure out how I'm going to do it first. Lol

I have a bit of a different idea: I listen to music in my Jeep by way of a flash drive I had my daughter download a few of my go to albums.
Instead of making the lighter itself usb port (which is a cool idea, not knocking it).
Making the lighter hole a port, and the FLASH DRIVE is the lighter.
So when your tunes are plugged in, it looks like well, the lighter!

I don't have any radio or speaker of any kind in the mustang. I will never need the lighter but will need to charge my phone. The last car show I was at, I just about drained my phone battery sitting all day at the show. At least that's my thinking and needs.
I may add a blue tooth speaker to the cross bar on the roll bar which would be placed between the front seats. That's very low on my list because I really enjoy driving my mustang and listening to it! I'm not driving it to listen to music. Not yet anyways. Lol

I have a device that fits my lighter receptacle with a usb port in it. Plug and play. But it would be cool to have it hard wired.

I refuse to put that in mine, well maybe my last resort if I can't make this idea work. I did look into replacing the entire lighter assembly with a dedicated usb port. They were all just to bulky looking and just didn't give me a good vibe about them.

I like the idea but I suspect that you have some high walls to break through to execute it. Nothing's impossible, but a simple hidden cord or one of those portable battery packs might be better solutions. At least the portable battery pack approach would not physically tie you to your vehicle at a show (or elsewhere) as your lighter idea will.
But, I admire your creative idea and if you can make it work, more power to you. ![]()
