Sucks to be you Mark, I'm relieved to hear you came through the smash up in relativly good shape, the car not so much.
I just came back from a six day drive to and back from Lincoln Ne. in my 68 and I saw at least two situations similar to what you described. Some times I wonder who's bright idea it is to do this kind of road work during high traffic flow times. A lot of drivers are whacky and do whatever they can just to get a couple of car lengths ahead.
Perhaps you can by the car back from the insurance company and use it for a doner on a new project.

Amen to the fact you were relatively unhurt. Any accident you can walk away from...
And I had to read this on the day I was going to take my newly licensed daughter out to learn how to drive my '92, 5 speed...I think I'll be extra cautious and patient with my instruction.

I'm really glad you weren't hurt, that's the most important part..........sux about the vert too but.
As for DON and his comment.........at the Bash, I"ll hold him and you dump a 55 gal barrel full of ice water over his melon head for the ultimate ALS challenge............

Man!....didn't take butta few seconds for that thing to go from prime ride to junk. Sooo glad you were able to walk away.
Give yourself a few days to " get-your-head-back-together" before making any decisions. And by all means get your neck and back checked out!

Wow, Mark, glad to see you made it through that ok. As your emotions settle down, you're probably going to be re-living this in your mind forever and you'll probably want to know the root cause of this accident. It's always good to know.

Holy Crap, jsut be glad you are ok! In my line of work as a Paramedic, just know that at those speeds and the mechanism of injury involved, it could have been really bad! You are very blessed.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes, and the "keep it in perspective " thoughts. I am truly greatful that no other cars or people were involved or hurt in this accident. Then I am greatful that I was not seriously hurt either. I am also thankful to the people who pulled over and stopped to help me especially that lady from Elgin\Texas. Its extremely depressing to see something that I have been working on for years, and basically took up all my free time, is now gone.
Like Ozblitz says, The soreness kicked in yesterday and today. My face, ny neck and my back are stiff. Bit dizzy too

Like gjz30075 says, I'm still trying to figure out what happened. I noticed the driver rear tire was blown out and the rim broke but there was no damage to the right rear quarter panel. I also noticed that the brake lights were on with the keys out of the ignition. It wasn't headlights, it was brakelights, like the brake pedal was stuck. . I wasn't speeding, but I think when I applied the brakes the rears locked up. Not sure what happens when the rear brakes lock up. But wondering if that blew out the driver rear tire, and that made the car turn left into the concrete barrier. Or if the car veered to the left it made the rear tire blow out. I anticipated that traffic would slow down due to the merge of the closing left lane into my lane, so I applied the brakes way ahead of time, which is probably why I didn't rear end anybody. When I hit the wall, thats probably when the front tire blew out.
i'm probably going to be out of the mustang hobby now. Wife will not let me get another, she hates old cars and she thinks convertilbles are unsafe especially when that lady told her that she thought the car was going to flip over the concrete guardrail. She thinks its the fact that its due to the car being OLD that is why I had the accident. I'm starting to think she is right. I was driving safely, and defensiviely and out of the blue, I'm into the wall. The fact that I wasn't going fast was probably the reason I'm not badly hurt. Yeah, I think my mustang days are over.

Glad to hear you were not seriously injured and my condolences on the passing of your stang. I hope you will seriously reconsider staying in the Mustang hobby. I picked my forum name because of yours. I thought it was cool that you can tell where you are located just by your forum name plus I am just up the road from you and I am originally from SC. Anyway good luck on recovering from muscle soreness and maybe a newer model Mustang is in order. Considering the safety improvements that have been made over the years.

Of the top 8 vehicles for 2014/'15 with a 5-star crash rating, there's only one Ford (#5) in that ranking and it's not a Mustang.
Driving a vehicle comes with inherent risks. The only way you can eliminate that risk is to not drive or don't be a passenger of a vehicle driven by someone else.
The best, safest, highest crash rated vehicle in the world will still not come with a 100% guarantee that you will not be hurt or killed in an accident.
The accident is new and fresh in your mind. Give it some time for the shock of the incident to subside.

Well Mark...hate to hear your decision about "throwing in the towel" butt......after the accident alot of stuff goes through your head.
You know that car can be pulled straighter than when it was new! It's only totalled to the insurance guy. Could be less expensive than building another one. Don't let it go to the jubk yard right away.IMHO

Mark, Ive had a few minor fender benders over the years but Ive only had one major accident. When I was 16, I rolled a 1976 Chevy Chevette 4 times. My best friend was thrown from the car, about 20 feet in the air, and by the Grace of God, only suffered a pulled muscle. No cuts. I suffered a few cuts, but the biggest damage was psychological, knowing I almost killed my best friend.
On the way home from the hospital, I kept saying I was never going to drive again and so on, when we got home, my dad gave me the keys to his Falcon and MADE me drive over to see my friend, muttering something about getting back on the horse.
To this day, I believe that was the right call, and the incident has made me a better driver. I have never had a second accident that was my fault (the other two Ive had were minor and 100% the other driver) I hope that once the psychological scare has subsided, that you can get back on the horse so to speak as well.
I also think you are on the right path with the tire. That could happen in a brand new car.

Sorry to hear about your car, but I'm glad you're ok.
I really hope you don't let this put you out of the Mustang hobby. Like others have said things like this happen in new cars too... especially if it was tire-related.

Mark once again sorry to see this happen after all the work you put in the car. I don't know if your car is repairable or if you want to repair it. Only you know what is best for you and your family, everyone is different. If you decide to give up on this hobby I respect your decision. Only thing I can say is it doesn't mean you have to leave the forum, you still have good insight to give. Maybe even see you at a bash sometime. Good luck in whatever you decide. (JUST DON'T DO IT TO HASTILY)

Like some have said...think about fixing it...just park it for a while and let it stew...Mark I have been in 3 AND A HALF TOTALS. none were my cars,but the last 1/2 total was a used Toyota Celeca 5 speed loaded I was road testing with the salesman for my oldest daughter prior to her buying it,actually me buying it... during the road test a guy cut right in front of us making an illegal turn...the car was hurt but not totalled,it was a great car,I wanted it...I told the dealer fix it and I'll take it...It was a great car and served her well for years...oh yes, she totalled the one before this one....jj

X2 on pulling a tarp over it and letting everyone cool off. When your wife gets over the initial shock, she is probobly like most car nut wives and realizes how much we love these old ponies and give you the support you deserve to go ahead and fixerup.
There is a lot of the damage that you could fix yourself. You would be surprised how you can pull a unibody straight with a couple of trees, some chain, a tractor and an acetylene torch, my brother does it all the time.

Glad that at least some of the safety systems worked the way they're supposed to and you walked away from that. I was rear-ended a couple of years ago, too many folks really do drive without the slightest understanding of basic physics, and can say you should really follow up with a doctor - I didn't do that right away and things still aren't a good as they could have been if I had. I sure do respect chiropracy now though.
I also agree with the other's here recommending that you think a spell before giving up on something it sounds like you really love. All the best.

if you can't figure out what happened then it was probably somthing outside you're car that caused it maybe a bit of wet pavement soft soulder somthing. i think that you would have probably felt somthing go wrong in the car if somthing broke suspention wise to cause that. make sure to tell you're wife that it can happen with ANY car not just old ones. this could have happend to a brand new camry or mustang or what have you.

If the rear brakes locked up as you suspect, it could result in the rear end coming around on you (static friction force greater than dynamic friction).
Don't think I read it, but I'm seeing something that'll alleviate your wife's concerns about you driving an old Mustang...

Mark, glad you are ok, the car can be replaced, I do this for a living for the past 30 years firefighter and have see lots of wrecks, the main thing is that you are alive, but I do feel your frustration about the car and your emotions.
