Miss May strikes again

For those who don't know Miss May is a 65 2+2 dressed as kinda like a 66 Shelby. EFI 331, 4R70W, 3.55 trasc-loc.
I swear the 2+2 is influenced by a Dark side of the Force, that fights me at each and every thing I do or try. Cos It has struck again.
I do have the new wa'rin harness in all checked out everything seeming to work, I had been procrastinating on re-installin the seats and actually driving the 2+2. (Probably For fear something would go/be wrong) Anywho, Today the carpet got all the wa'rin bits vaccumed out, seats re-installed, last little bits squared away and I drove the 2+2 out of the garrage, around the block, onliest thing wrong, E'lectric Speedo is erratic just sitting there, will have to fix that. Drove across town to Sam's World to fil up with hi test. 2+2 ran good, Folks gave the thumbs up or yelled, "Sounds Great!!" Ti'll I was almost there, and all'a sudden TOCK TOCK TOCK on the slightest accelleration. Oh Lordy, Is that a mechanical sound or exhaust sound or what. Worst fears of something mechanical hitting somewhars assail me.
After I filled up with gas before RTB, the dang gas gage is now reading E. was at 5/8, nother Dang.
After RTB, called a 5.0 Racer Buddy (Dave) over, (He had a new Moates EFI program for me too)  Noise seems to be an exhaust leak around the intake manifold?? With upper off, old band-aid revealed, now I gotta repair the old over torque crack in lower intake which let go, split Phenolic spacer between intake upper/lower the EGR passage. TOCK TOCK TOCK was just EGR exhaust passage noise. However the new Moates program dictates change of MAF electronics(new ready on shelf) and relocate ACT sensor from intake horn to boss on lower intake. once lower pulled I will have it welded, helicoiled, drill & tap EGR holes for pipe plugs, and drill & tap boss for ACT sensor.
Dave has a proper long intake bolt to replace threaded rod band-aid, AND the number of a real good welder/machinest who can do a quick turn around on the intake. Which then can be re-installed. and car given a little road time(Please). Before heading off to join Jerry F & Lori on the way to the Bash.

Re: Miss May strikes again

I feel your pain.

Finally got the carb all installed, all new steel 3/8" hard lines plumbed (thanks to Brian for helping).  So, the ONLY THING LEFT TO INSTALL to get it running is that little 4" long piece of 3/8" fuel hose that goes from the pickup to the new fuel line.  Had to tug on the hose a little to get it to mate up with the new line.  The super high quality MADE IN CHINA piece of crap rubber o-ring slipped because the piece of junk MADE IN CHINA fuel sender/pickup does not index perfectly in the tank like the original one did.  So about 5/8 of a 22 gallon tank is starting to leak out around the o-ring with the car up on the lift.  Luckily the new tank has a drain plug.  Sherry came to help out.  We used a flexible transmission funnel with a hastily cut section of garden hose and started draining the tank.  Of course, gas all over the place, arms cramping from holding the funnel up in the air.  Sherry was directing the hose to fill up the tractor and every container we could get our hands on to drain the tank.  That is, until she raised up and smacker her head on one of the steel ramps on the lift, which was right about eye level but luckily hit her on the top of the head.  She will live, but scared the hell out of me.  I figured I would have to hold the funnel up there until the tank ran dry before I could put it down to go help her.  She was able to make it to the house to get the cut covered up.

At least I know for sure I will not have any EFI problems in the future because every single part that had anything to do with it (other than the pump still inside the gas tank) has been yanked off the car.

I knew it before and now I am certain that a carb is the way to go.  And all that electronic retrofit MADE INI CHINA high quality stuff is just not ever going to find its way onto my car ever again.

If I ever build another Mustang it will have a carbed 5.0 roller engine with a Holley on it, iron exhaust manifolds and no power steering or air conditioning!  Simplicity is best from my experience.

OK, off the rant soapbox now, and I return you to the Trials and Tribulations of Tubo.

I have a picture of the draining apparatus.  will post later.  Probably should start a new post rather than hijack the TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF TUBO.

Re: Miss May strikes again

My Fuel sending started leaking in my 69 last year. Wouldn't you know it I had just filled up the darn tank.  I only had a 5 gallon gas can.   I filled up the lawn mower, roto tiller, ATV and my Van...LOL  What a PIA.  Im in the middle of installing the Steet Demon Carburetor.  So Im cutting fuel lines and adding new filter between the pump and carb.   Glad your making progress and your wife is ok.

Ok Steve, whats the fix for the pos made in china microscopic oring? had same issue when i put gas in new tank...the po had crimped the oring, plus the sender screw started turning when i tried to tighten up the nut attaching the sender wire. my car was on ground, so was easier to move 5 gallon jugs under the drain plug. thinking of using fuel cell sealant to supplem, ent the seal before i reinstall.its too bad no one has come out with a quality sender for these cars, or atleast a mere substantial oring.

I used a little RTV to hold the rubber seal in place until I got the ring twisted on.

Re: Miss May strikes again

So, MS has a gas leak....I can relate, and RTV won't help...Corky has parts falling off faster than he can bolt them on...I can relate to that too, got left hip fixed just in time for the right to start giving trouble...and Sherry has the lumps, I seriously hope she is okay.  I can relate to that also and I'm really sorry to hear that she did a BB and tried to knock herself out.  I have put myself to my knees more times than I can count and it ain't no fun.  Maybe that has something to do with my inability to get anything done.

Hang in guys, at least  your car isn't ocupying three stalls and the shop attic.

See y'all, and your cars, in a couple of weeks.

HeliArc work is done. However it turns out the welder dude isn't a machinest.
The two shops in town I've used are "Closed Doors".
After work tomorrow I'll hunting down and talk to a couple of guys.
Weekend is no good as I must 12hr work Sat & Sun.. IF I can get Miss May back together Monday, I can still do a couple of local miles on the car before leavin.....or "Plan B".

If you haven't already changed out the fuel sending unit O-ring, I've used this stuff before on the sender's O-ring. --good stuff.

Re: Miss May strikes again

I went through my collection of o-rings and found one that was the correct diameter to fit propery in the groove.  Some appeared to be stretched out and would not fit the groove correctly.  I packed the groove with wheel bearing grease to hold it in place and used a better-formed ring (Scott Drake part was crapola) and it went together and sealed it up.  Also recalibrated the fuel gauge to get more realistic bottom-half-of-tank readings.

No more leaks, and the carb fired right up once it got fuel.  Feeling better about the trip now.

Interesting...better than my idea of a curable sealant as long as it holds up to fuel.

Hylomar is fantastic stuff.  I discovered it back in 90 when I rebuilt a Mazda rotary. I was dealing with Racing Beat in SoCal and that's the only stuff they could recommed for sealing between the rotor housings and the side plates.  It ain't cheap but if you follow the distructions it works great.

Re: Miss May strikes again

MM is bout as ready as it's goona.
Did a Data log run and reset some stuff on the Moates Quarterhorse.
While we were at it a readjustment on the Baumann program for the 4R70W, like some how the rear gear setting had reverted to 2.79, now back to 3.55. TPS is re-calibrated and adjusted.
The 16's with new rubber, BFG Sport Comp, stick sooooo much better. I'm a happy driver see Y'all Thursday. Not a great photo BUTT the 16's show up.
