Ramses installs new rear end in his car, nearly loses his own

Ramses installed the nodular 9" center section in his car the other day and must have twisted the wrong way while lifting it.  He has been laid up in some pretty intense back pain for the last week.  He is too young to be having old-guy problems like that!

I have volunteered my services to adjust his TENS unit...

Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Take care and get better.

Re: Ramses installs new rear end in his car, nearly loses his own

Ramses,
I have had life long back problems, I feel for you. I advise getting a good diagnosis of what is wrong now and make sure you do what is needed to get it fixed so that it does not nag you for years to come. My back problem connot be cured by surgery, but my he-man fireman son had spinal surgery at 32. You do not want to go there.

Re: Ramses installs new rear end in his car, nearly loses his own

He better take the time to let it heal fully or will end up with a spine that looks like mine.
I had this done in 1997 and still have to live on oxycodone daily.

Re: Ramses installs new rear end in his car, nearly loses his own

Back pain is some really tricky stuff. I've heard of guy that have an operation and swear it is the best thing they ever done. And I've also heard of stories like Rudi. Take care of yourself Rames, listen to the doctor, take time to heal and God willing this will just be a minor inconvenience.

If this forum can't fix it, it isn't broke.

Re: Ramses installs new rear end in his car, nearly loses his own

I had a bulging disc in my lower back. I lived with it for 10 years. The last year i couldn't take it anymore when my leg started going numb while I tied my shoes. Had a microdiskectomy 2 years ago. I wish I had it done a long time ago. You never want to live with back pain, it is miserable.

I agree with Rudi.  I have my tale of back woe too - to the extent that I almost cannot work on my car.  Tuesday I go to the Dr to see about it.  Get a good Dr and a complete diagnosis.  That will give you a start on correcting the problem.

Re: Ramses installs new rear end in his car, nearly loses his own

Thanks for the encouragement you guys, I really appreciate it. Im sure this will pass, just sucks how all of a sudden you become disabled because of one dumb movement you did. Feels like its muscular but I am not 100% sure yet as I haven't been able to stand upright to go to the doctor to see what it is. I am up and walking a bit now but the slightest bend of my back, forward or back, knocks me down to my knees. I can't even get into the car without dying of pain. Its like a cramp that hits me as soon as I move a bit. Anyone have a sledge hammer? Maybe that will fix it.

Thanks again, will keep y'all updated.

Re: Ramses installs new rear end in his car, nearly loses his own

I think Glen's 65 5.0 has just the medicine you need, at least to help you be able to get in a car ( as a passenger).
You need to go to the doc before it gets worse.
Good luck.

Re: Ramses installs new rear end in his car, nearly loses his own

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.  There's nothing like back pain and you can't appreciate how bad it is until it hits you.  I did something to my back about 15 years ago.  I was lifting something and I felt absolutely fine when I was doing it.  But the next morning I could not get out of bed or walk- I literally crawled to the bathroom with bolts of lighting shooting down a leg and an arm every few "steps" and managed to get myself into the bath tub where I soaked for 2 hours before I could move.  It took about 2 weeks to walk fully upright again and about a month to feel better.    Every now and then I tweak my back a little, but (knock on wood) haven't had anything even close to that again.

Re: Ramses installs new rear end in his car, nearly loses his own

Customer of ours was swinging a sledge hammer driving a shaft out of a piece of equipment, was standing in a position where his legs where locked, swung and missed and the momentum of the sledge hammer twisted his body around and wrenched his back badly, he didn't realize he was really hurt just thought he wrenched it and needed to lie down and rest, a couple hours later he was paralyzed from the waist down and spends his days in a wheelchair.

Don't take a chance, go get checked out.

The amount of fun is directly proportionate to the damage done.

Re: Ramses installs new rear end in his car, nearly loses his own

Update:

So I went to the doctor and was given the news that I only severely pulled a lower back muscle on my right side. No herniated disc so that is good! Doc says most likely resulted when I picked up the 9",laid down, and contorted my body in a weird way while lying under the car. Bending down and straightening my back caused me to pull it bad.

Now that I think about it, I picked up that housing with horrible form. Ive been to "Lifting Heavy Objects Squat Class 101" taught by steve before, but I just forgot to squat and bent down just using my waist (like a donkey)

Doc says I should be 100% within a couple of weeks. Brought home some muscle relaxers so I will be on cloud 9 here shortly.

Thanks for all the support guys, y'all really encouraged me and uplifted my spirits.

Re: Ramses installs new rear end in his car, nearly loses his own

I know when I had my center section rebuilt and I installed it I said I would never do it again.   Its a PIA laying on the ground and getting it up there.  Then hope the gasket and sealer stays in place while lifting it up there.  Glad your doing better!

Re: Ramses installs new rear end in his car, nearly loses his own

Got bad news for you Ramses, those muscle relaxants are not "happy pills". They work on your muscles, not your mind. I hope they work better for you than they ever did for me.

They work quite well with alcohol! ;)

You know, I never figured out if it was a warning or a suggestion when pills say that alcohol can cause greater effect.

Re: Ramses installs new rear end in his car, nearly loses his own

Ramses,
Muscle relaxers are only half the cure. In addition, you'll need therapeutic massages. I've arranged for "Lola" to stop by...please don't thank me now. Just be careful if "she picks you up and sets you on her knee and says, hey pretty boy won't you come home with me"?
Seriously, get well soon......
