I don't get it........

Perhaps someone can shed some light on why all the hype, focus, recent interest in driverless car development.
I simply can't wrap my gray matter around how a driverless car can be the "thing of the future".  I mean, even George Jetson drove his own space-car so why would we even consider having/owning/using driverless vehicles?  Technology is great but for me, I will always prefer to be the driver of whatever vehicle I own.
Am I alone in this thinking or has anyone else questioned it as well?

Re: I don't get it........

Several factors involved. 1) The manufacturers are developing the technology to sell, more money for them. Since it looks like they CAN build autonomous vehicles, they are premarketing them to either get folks wanting the technology or to get folks used to the idea so they won't complain like Josh. 2) The Gubmint thinks the average driver has the driving skills of a gerbil so the Feds want control of the vehicles removed from their grubby hands. 3) The latest two generations care nothing about vehicles, so they want vehicles that drive theirselves so those special snowflakes will never have to put down their phones or miss a second of their social media. 4) Google wants self driving vehicles. Game over!

I'd much rather sleep during a rush-hour commute and let KITT take control than continually stare at the brake lights in front of me.

Re: I don't get it........

I agree with Josh,  but having spent many an hour in traffic jams, I get where Jeff is coming from too.

If these ever do become mainstream, how long before people figure out how to jail break their ECUs and reprogram the cars to drive like they would drive themselves?  We could be right back where we started from before long.

Re: I don't get it........

Good points Ron....thanks...although let me clarify that I'm not complaining; simply trying to understand the latest phenomenon....

So, let's say this new tech marvel becomes reality.  Would it be safe to say that these new wundercars will have collision avoidance systems installed??

Stay tuned...

I prefer to drive myself as well.
But, if that technology does take over, at least offer me an override button for the occasional burnout or high speed blast.

Re: I don't get it........

Uber has already been test running computer driven taxis in Pittsburgh. Said they picked the Pittsburgh market because of the driving challenges. I don't know if they were talking about the terrain or the people.

Re: I don't get it........

When I was in grade school we had to do a current event report every Friday. I remember, to this day, a report of self driving cars and it had a cartoon picture of a glass domed vehicle with a couple playing checkers while the car zoomed down the road!
Kind a stupid now because 'nobody knows how to play checkers anymore'....not manually play checkers anyway. May be electronic checkers or virtual checkers'!!
I know the reaction to my current event report, back then,  was just a big eye roll from anybody that was even listening or paying attention.
Kinda like now!

Re: I don't get it........

I actually think that driverless cars could be a really great thing.

Think about all the assholes who almost cream you every day on the road because they really want to text their friend or put on makeup or eat spaghetti or stare at the clouds or whatever else they're doing. And then give them the ability to do what they want to be doing... while not endangering you! Sounds pretty flippin great to me.

Traffic would also be reduced (less wrecks, less assholes cutting around in traffic causing people to slam on their brakes, cars can follow each other more closely) and I guess it would be irrelevant anyways if you could catch a nap on the way to your destination.

As long as they don't ban manually driven cars, then driverless cars seem like an amazing deal for those of us who DO like driving.

Re: I don't get it........

When I was younger and would let myself become enraged by older drivers I vowed to hire some teenager to drive me around in my olden years so I wouldn't be a menace on the road. Now it looks like the car will be driving for me.

I drove down to Florida with the family this last July!  There were times that would of been really nice.  To watch a movie or take a nap.  But id have to 100% have to trust it before using it too!

Re: I don't get it........

I work on very expensive and highly complicated machines every day. (Boeing 737's). They have all kinds of very highly advanced electronics systems on board for operation of the aircraft. They sometimes fail. That's why I have a job. If an inflight failure occurs, there is always a redundant system to fall back on, and if that fails, that is why there is a flight crew on board. If that inflight failure happens, there is always lots of room to maneuver the aircraft to a safe landing. If a failure of an autocar happens in fast moving heavy traffic - would the average texting or video watching or snoozing driver be able to retake control of the vehicle and get it safely stopped before an accident occurs? I doubt it very much. I will be the first one in line to purchase an autocar - once HELL FREEZES OVER!

Re: I don't get it........

Autodriving cars, maybe.  There have been people working on this technology for decades.  Maybe in some limited circumstances, but the real danger is hackers.  A lot of vehicles are already complex enough that they can be hacked and the hacker can gain control over some vehicle functions like brakes (thanks to integrated computer controlled ABS).  Of course, with a built in backdoor this would also give the government control over your vehicle.  This is what you get when everyone seems to want WiFi in their car.  Once the system is connected to the net there's a way in, and that means vulnerability.

I'm reminded that not that long ago Porsches didn't have cupholders.  The Germans were baffled that anyone would try to eat or drink something while driving.  Of course that was before they started building SUVs and widened their brand to take advantage of the largest market in the world for vehicles.

One thing's for sure, there will always be an override.  Even if one isn't built in from the factory someone will figure it out and market it.

I am a computer programmer by trade... and I see computers fail and do crazy stuff almost every day. This is my fear too Ron.  No self-driving car for me!

However, I agree with Kelly's point above... maybe it'll make it a little safer for the rest of us that actually want to drive our cars.  Even a malfunctioning computer driving a car is bound to be safer than that moron that swerved into my lane and nearly hit me head on because he was too busy texting to be bothered with driving.

Re: I don't get it........

A few years ago, a Toyota Camry in "autocar mode" broadsided my car with my 15YO student driver at the wheel & my wife by his side.  Darned near took his life.  Driver of the Camry in autocar mode eventually lost her leg, as the bones were shattered badly from front impact with leg jammed on the brake pedal (to no avail).  Due to the laws of unintended consequences, I have no interest in autocars.

On the other hand, my wife's parents are aging, and if programming a destination into a gps would allow additional independence to a clear thinking, but physically feeble segment of the population, I can see the benefits.

Re: I don't get it........

I think our infrastructure would first need a major upgrade.  There would have to be something embedded in the road to keep cars in their lanes I think.  Magnets or metal or something.  In theory you could program the car to stay in its lane using the lines on the road, but there are too many things that could cause issues with that (snow, ice, heavy rain, etc.).  I think that's the first major step that would need to happen.  There are already cars that brake by themselves to keep idiots from rearending the guy in front of them.  ABS, traction control, etc.  These are all system designed to make cars safer so people can continue to be dangerous.  It seems autodriving or simply more automatic features are the next logical step.

All of this stuff has its growing pains, and the extent may ultimately determine whether or not there are ever truly autodriving cars.  I remember for example first gen GM ABS that was terrible.  I saw three different trucks that literally had the steering wheels bent from guys yanking on them with so much force while trying to apply the brakes while the ABS pump just kept bypassing fluid.  But eventually they figured ABS out, and now you barely know its there unless you are really hard on the brakes.  Of course, brakes have also gotten bigger and better too, so the lockup point has moved a good deal from the old disc/drum vehicles that had that first gen ABS.
