Looking for Transmission Install Help in Dallas

I need help finishing the install of a t-5 into my 66 stang.  This past saturday we got the sperator plate, flywheel, clutch, and transmission up and installed. (Hell yea!)  Now I need to do install the hydraulic clutch system I got from Modern Driveline.  It has instructions and I feel some what capable of doing it, but I'm kind of hesitant b/c it involves drilling holes and calibrating the system.  I'm using the external slave setup and I've never done anything like this before.  The old setup was a complete POS welded Z-bar setup so this should be a major upgrade.

I need to order some new hardware this week so I'll probably be planning on finishing the install in the next few weeks so that buys me some time.

I could pay you for your time, but not a lot.  Funds are low these days.  It would be more of a favor.  It's jacked up in the garage, not on a lift too.  A little bit uncomfortable, but it gets the job done.

I know beggers can't be choosers, but if you are offering to help please be knowledgeable past "I saw someone else do it" or "i've seen a youtube video on it".  I know a lot of people are eager to help, and while I appreciate it, I don't have the time or money to do guess work and just end up paying to get it towed to a shop to fix my screw up.

Send me a PM or just leave your contact info and I'll get back to you ASAP.

thanks guys.  Wish me luck.

Re: Looking for Transmission Install Help in Dallas

Just a suggestion, but since you are intelligent enough to drill the holes  in your bellhousing to install the adapter plate ( I am assuming you are using stock bell with adapter plate) and you got the tranny bolted in, you are probably smart enough to do the job with a little expert advice along the way.  What I am suggesting is to do it yourself, but post pictures of the parts and each step coming up on the forum here.  We can advise as to the proper way to do it without having to lay under your car in 100 degree heat that way!

If you figure a tow bill to a shop and paying someone to install it (who may or may not knoow how themselves) you really have nothing to lose.

Or just simplify your life and install a cable system!  Sorry - had to throw that in there.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

I have a 5.0 Swap and I ordered a newer, foxbody bellhousing so no adapter plate needed.  I got a quote from a shop in Lewisville who said they could do the entire install for $800 plus the cost of towing the car there.  I don't know how much they would charge me to just install the hydraulic clutch, but I'd still have to tow the car there.

A buddy of mine and I did most of the work over a saturday in the heat.  It takes too long to do the guess and check of starting the project and posting pictures.  Not to mention there is 100% chance I will get completely different opinions on how to do something and then I'll have to spend time researching what is fact from fiction.

This is a 6 hour, saturday type project for a couple of guys who have a solid idea as to what they are doing.  I thought about buying your setup but I didn't want to have to fidget w/ adjusting a cable and the hydraulic clutch is the 'advanced' upgrade from best I could tell.  It's basically an all new drive train so I went with the hydraulic clutch.  Everything I read from people who made the upgrade said it was a huge improvement over mechanical linkeage.  We'll see.

Re: Looking for Transmission Install Help in Dallas

If you can pull the transmission and put the T5 in there, then you can do the clutch...No Problem.
Don't think of this as a project, separate it into descrete tasks that can be done.
You are going to need to mount the master cylinder and the hydraulic hose and reservoir.
You are going to need to bleed and test the slave cylinder. That can be done without mounting it to the transmission.

Other than that you will need to mount the bracket and adjust the cylinder so that the stroke is right.
None of this is difficult, just a hassle to do by yourself. Definately not worth $800 for someone else to do at a shop. Give it a try and post some pictures if you hit a trouble spot. There are a lot of us that check regularly and you should get some advise fairly quickly.

Re: Looking for Transmission Install Help in Dallas

I live in Canton and work in Flower Mound. I just installed a T5, but I went with the cable clutch from Mustang Steve. These guys will answer any question you have, they really helped me out when I was stuck. So glad I did things myself. I have never installed a hydra clutch, but if you need a hand I can see if my schedule is free.

Re: Looking for Transmission Install Help in Dallas

I have done both, the hydraulic and the MS cable. About ten years ago I did the hydraulic on my 66, and it is not that big a deal, just take your time. The hardest part was getting the air out, a pain to bleed. I ended up taking it out as a system and hanging it from a ladder and bleeding the system, and then reinstalling it with out taking it apart, and everything worked fine.

With that said, I installed a T5 in the 68 a couple years ago and went with the MS cable set up. After all is done I prefer the cable set up. It has a better clutch feel, and there is less that can go wrong. Throw an extra cable in the trunk and your ready for anything, no special parts to go bad. I had the slave cylinder go out on the hydraulic set once, and I was dead in the water until I could get another one shipped to me (would hate for that to happen on a bash trip).

My wife even commented that she liked the feel of the cable clutch better.

One big plus for the hydraulic is you can run any header and exhaust set up you want.

Good Luck, and I know you can handle it, if you have made it this far, and you will feel much better with the end result if you do it yourself.

Re: Looking for Transmission Install Help in Dallas

Read the intructions for an hour to understand everything.  Measure 3 or 4 times then cut and drill.  I kind of like the looks of Hydraulic internal throwout bearing myself.

Re: Looking for Transmission Install Help in Dallas

I, too, have done the hydraulic thing on my son's t56 conversion.  Bleeding was the biggest chore.  Before installing the slave, we attached the Hyd line loosely to the slave to bleed air out of the master and hyd. line, and then tightened the line to the slave and proceeded to bleed the slave.  We found it easier to bleed the slave before bolting it up to the trans. Less mess on the garage floor.  (we tried a couple of slaves, in his application, to get the right master/slave volumes)

As to others comments on internal slaves, if one of those leaks, you're buying a new clutch and pp.  Also, it is real handy to depress the clutch release lever to get the final alignment when doing the trans install.  No can do with the internal clutch slaves.  Makes trans installation more difficult.

I went with the cable clutch on my mustang, but it's not on the road yet, so the jury is still out...in my garage....
