I recently installed a brand new reproduction 66 Mustang 289 oil pan on an engine I built for John Warley. I used the one piece blue Fel-Pro gasket, since I have had good results using them the last few years.
I am sure glad I discovered the huge leak before this got installed in the car. I put three quarts of oil in it so I could prime the oil system. After doing so, I noticed a puddle of oil under the harmonic balancer.
It turns out the radius on the front of the pan is formed too large. Enough so that it did not compress the seal under the radius of the timing cover at all. Oil was pouring out. Do not use the Scott Drake pan unless you use only RTV to install it. That way, you can be certain you have it sealed.
Don’t worry, John. I will rework the oil pan installation using RTV, as I have recommended for over 20 years, and you can be assured it will never leak.
My opinion of Scott Drake parts remains unchanged. They are puttng junk on the market. Just imagine if this had not been discovered until the engine was installed in the car.

I just installed the SD B302 repro pan and it fit well with no leaks to speak of, although I’ve only
got dyno time on the engine so far. I also used the one-piece blue Fel-Pro basket. I added the oil pan rails from the 5.0s for good measure.

+1 on the RTV been using it on 351C. Came from working for brand that switched to RTV 30 yrs ago and it worked for them. Been using Permatex Right stuff, supposed to able to add oil and run it right away but wait I 24 hrs

Yikes Just ordered a complete AC system from old air products in FT Worth. No manufacturer stamps on it. I just notice at the mustang vendors, Jegs and Summit the same system has Scott Drake stamped on it. Yikes time to figure out who makes this. I quit Scott Drake completely after many tolerance failures.
Yep Just got off phone, they are the manaufactor for Scott Drake ie they label their stuff with that NAME only. Tech support was very helpful and didn't mind reveiling all sources of componenets. And they gave me another 10% off for being Vet.

Hmmm. The oil pan I put on my 351W is a SD and fit the same as MS was saying. Plus the crank was hitting it after I started it up. I used the Felpro gasket with black RTV but got a new one since I had to pull the pan to make room for the crankshaft. I put about a 1/4 inch fill of RTV on it to fill the gap. It is a nice purdy Ford Blue though.

Its really a shame when solely out of greed a company that started as a premium brand in the industry has turned into a hit or miss whore. Making matters worse they've also thrown their hat into the Fox body market as well. This is why I'm such a big believer in reviews. Take the time to review the stuff you buy. It might not help you, but hopefully it helps the next guy.

Finding good parts is part of the hobby. Few things as satisfying as scoring on some good parts (thanks to BB). Few things as frustrating as paying top dollar for scrap. Brings to mind Red351's struggle with the SD wheels a year or so ago. Keep pestering the vendor until you get some sort of satisfaction.
6sally6 often puts a plug in for Steve's Mustang Parts. I will too. Reputable guys, that install what they sell. Come to a BASH, meet Glen & Steve in person, and order your parts from them online. Call them on the phone if you need to. I have placed several orders, and have never been disappointed in anything, including the quality of the parts I received.
MS, I'm sorry I cannot dig into a stash and get you a good pan. There has got to be an OEM SBF pan in Texas, somewhere. It's a really big state.

Its why I've been tracking down NOS parts for my '89 GT for the past seven months, and paying considerably more than what reproduction parts command. Hey, if you've got a part number give eBay a try. They don't have everything, but what they do have is pretty amazing most of the time.

The pan has been reinstalled using ultra grey rtv only. It will never leak.

Maybe we should add a forum section for product reviews...

Thats a great idea, I have a background in Quality Engineering Design/Test and can spot manufacturing BS easily, When working I was hated world wide.
ie simple as this was (sometimes)

So Old Air Products makes the AC products sold under the Scott Drake brand name? Explains why that stuff I bought seemed of good quality. I'm betting the stuff that has quality issues is from FuChow province or similar, made by 10 year olds in sweat shops.

No NO just opposite Old Air Engineers then hires Sub contractors/Vendors. They will put ANYBODY S label on it for a fee. (they don't use anything from Scott Drake)

Which isn't necessarily indicative of deficient quality, but depends heavily on who is making sure that the parts coming back from the manufacturer(s) meet all the pertinent criteria. A company like OAP probably does a good job of that. Its pretty clear that SD does not.
