working on my "pal's" 66 Mustang.
Little history(short version)
Its been apart for 6 years and survived two moves....and we only lost the water pump pulley.
Didn't discover it was missing until late Sat. evening so "no-fire-off" of newly rebuilt 289(with a bigger cam in it...of course!)
The engine was rebuilt by a local race engine builder/machinist.....who died and his shop was locked up for 4/5 years!!(with the 289 in it)
Since it was probably the ONLY SBF in the whole "Chevy engine shop"it was pretty easy to identify. The son of the owner was selling off all the unclaimed engines and Larry just happened to hear about it so he went and claimed his(it was already paid for!)
First time either of us ever dealt with installing a C-4 tranny. "Different" from installing a T-5/4 speed...very. The cooling line install was very interesting with the tranny already mounted and bolted up...VERY INTERESTING. Very fun weekend!!!
Should get it "lite-off" in a few days. Got everything set / pre-oiled /primed/ timed/and new gas and ready to go.

Oh BTW concrete floors are VERY cold in February!!

Concrete floors are cold in February in SC? Sort of a cry me a river situation there...
Did you locate a wp pulley? I probably have one in the milk crate o' pulleys I've got if you need it let me know. Cost of shipping and its yours.

Just a reminder, Mike. When you far up that 289 be sure to bring the revs up to 1500 or more and let 'er run like that for 20 minutes or so. I know you know this but with every one going "roller" these days a guy might forget the flat cam rules.
And tell Larry "Hey" for us. I didn't get to yap with him much in Florida...it was sort of an abreviated Bash for us.

Oh come on now. I was just talking with my buddy in Pawlys Island. He said it’s been in the 80’s during the day and high 50’s at night. It was a balmy 29* by me yesterday. I hate you southerners, lol.

Yes, but if you plan a lift locate it before pouring the slab. Otherwise you end up having to have the floor x-rayed to make sure you don't hit the radiant piping. My neighbor ran into that situation with his shop.

Exactly! We had amazing weather last week, got to almost 60 one day, but I knew what was coming. February in DE, and today no school and already 5" of snow with more on the way tonight. Not a lot of snow for those that live farther north or in the midwest, but you have to remember that DE has no idea what to do with it. I could train monkeys to run the plows more efficiently...

Just order up a new 65" flat screen TV for your wife and use the cardboard box to lay on. Takes ALL the cold out of a floor! BUTT, you still have to pry yourself up OFF that floor! A four post lift works even better.

Huskinhano.......twern't in Surfside Beach, went wayyyyyy up north to Greenville to waller on the cement floor!
MS......you are sooooo right about gett'in back UP off 'en de flow. A little text-a-pade did lighten-the-day though!
Bullet Bob... Yep...the boy is a little nervous about the cam break-in ordeal. Funny....back-end-the-day..FT camshaft break-in was a ho-hum event. Not anymore.
TKO...thanx for the offer!! I'll let'em know butt......I believe he has already "hit-up" Mustangs Unlimited in Atl. for the part.

That's why the old condenser/point ignitions were great. You could set the crank to the initial timing you wanted, put a test light across the points and turn the dizzy toward #1 until the light came on....Perfect timing for initial far up. If the pot was anywhere close you could light it and stuff a screw driver under the throttle stop and go have a congratulatory beer. By the end of the beer the cam was broke in and the rings were seated...time to go racing.
I used to tune up VWs on my day off, usually had three or four lined up for oil change and tune up. Never put a timing light on one, just used the test light method which, incidentally, was the method VW suggested in the manual.
If that engine has bbe setting for six years I just hope you or someone applied some moly cam lube.

Oh yeah!! That's what took so long. We drained the old oil (was s'pose to have break-in lube already in it) Butt didn't want to risk it. Drained and FLUSHED the gas tank. Flushed/re-ran/and primed the gas line. New tranny fluid
Verified TDC and primed oil passages
New plugs and wires
Got most all the bases covered (I think)

Butt...is the cam liberally smeared with cam lube? If'n it ain't there is a better chance of wiping out the cam upon startup. Just sayin'.

who-nose??..The builder is/WAS one of the best around and he sez..."shez-ready-ta-far-off"
He even had it at TDC(we ck'ed)
We didn't pull it down that far to check the cam lobes. I wonder if there is a "shelf life" to that break-in moly/goo/stuff?
Guess we will see!!

What are cold concrete floors? Never heard of them. Its Zero outside and my floors are a comfy 70F. I love my radiant in-floor heating in my slabs.

There might be some way to do it, but you can't for example run cold water through a radiant system because it will condensate and cause problems. I thought about that years ago, but after talking to some people in the industry determined it was a no go.

REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
