WHAT?? I took my transmission out and have the rear main exposed, have the new seal. Question, I know you have to lube the inner part of the seal before installing it. BUT, do I used anything on the outside of the seal? Like rtv or just oil it or just shove it in there DRY???

I would see what the manufacturer recommends. FelPro, etc. usually have instructions on their website if the seal didn't come with any. I would really look the crank over too, see if it has a wear groove in it and requires a sleeve. One piece RMS rarely leak unless the engine has a lot of miles on it.
If you do use RTV I'd give it a full 24 hours to cure before filling he crankcase. I've had consistently better lasting sealing from RTV doing that.

Did that job on my 90 Fox convertible many years ago. Turned out to be a massive valve cover leak.
I stuck some grease on the OD of the seal as well as oiled the seal surface. Don't know if right or wrong, but it never leaked. The important thing is using a driver that fits the seal 100% so you don't bend the seal. Check out all your old schedule 40 pipe unions. I think a big'un fits it pretty good.

I used a oil filter tool cup and pounded it in my sons 5.8. I put RTV around the outside of the seal after is was in so it was flush and smooth. After I installed the pan I did the same thing.

Never done it unless engine was dis-assembled and on stand.
Don't chew hafta remove the rear main bearing saddle or sump'thin?

Nope, not for a 1 piece.

Terry there is that You Tube video on remove/replace one piece 302 main seal, find the one that shows how to convert a PVC pipe cap into a seal driver.
Might find some who'd disagree, however I'd apply a very thin coat of Permatex to the seal before seatiing.
Glad Ya got the tranny out.

I got the seal installed and decided to re do the oil pan gasket while it was all exposed. Have to pick up new gasket and RTV today and hope to start reassembly tonight.
When I put the flywheel bolts back on should I use something on the threads? It appears there was something on them when I took them off but cant tell what it is.

Pretty sure crank is drilled and threaded right threw, so you have to seal bolts or or have another slight oil leak.

What Jim said .... plus sealer on the two rear large pan bolts.

Not RTV

Terry I used Permatex High Temperature Thread Sealant (Item #59214) on my threads. Looks like hi temp pipe dope to me in a small tube. Hope this is helpful.

Right. The flywheel bolts need sealant. Apply to the BOLT THREADS, not the female threads in the hole, so you don’t push goop into the inside of the engine. 351w has blind holes, so not needed on those. 289, 302, 5.0 have holes open to the crankcase.
In reality, darn near any type sealer or rtv will work for this. Just get all the old oil off both threads first.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
