Building a 331 for the 70 Mustang. Original block boring. 030 over. Scat kit with flat top pistons. World product heads with 58cc chambers and 180 runners. Running rebuilt c4 with 2000 ish stall converter. Thinking comp cam ex268.

Once built, send to me and I'll break it in for you.

Whats the predicted Torque specs/rpm ??

NICE!!
Remember. Lotsa timing coming in early
20* initial may not be too much! Lotsa initial will naturally cause a higher idle speed. Allowing you to turn DOWN the curb idle makes sure the little slot hickets on the primary side of carb is small
Bigg(Dr) cams like lotsa initial. Really cleans up the idle and makes it rev up real snappy
With right gear should be a real "tire smoke machine"
Need video or it din-unt happen

I stopped trying to pick cams two decades ago. Call Comp, Crane, or one of the other grinders. Tell them everything about the engine, car, and intended use. Let them get you the right cam. They log thousands of dyno hours a year testing their products. Even most engine builders can't compete with that, and even the best ones chose a cam in consultation with a cam company. I'm not a fan of one size fits all cams, and you never really know how dated the technology in the catalogs is, but they do. A hot cam for one head may be a terrible one for another, etc. Even if they custom ground you a cam you're talking an additional $100-$150. Money well spent when you consider even a budget engine is going to end up in the $5,000 range.

Good advice if you could get a timely response. Last time I asked Comp Cam for advice I got te response about a month after the motor was in the car and running. Of course it was a lot different grind than I chose. I was trying to be conservative.

I don’t pick cams either. I talked with Brent Lykins about mine and he came up with a custom roller for me on the first build. I will using it in the next motor too.
you gonna splurge for a roller or stick with a flat tappet?

On Warley’s 331 I built earlier this year, I used a 272 Howard’s roller cam. My benchmark measurement is if it will spin the tires in second gear by just mashing the throttle. It succeeded. And it sounds really nice. Might not be the highest HP that engine could produce with a more radical cam profile, but I think he is pretty pleased with the results. And it was built using crappy 1986 iron heads, as well.

Call Crane. That's who I use, because they actually have tech people working. Last time I called Comp I left a message. After a day I called Crane, spoke to a tech immediately, and Comp called me back about a week after I already had the cam Crane shipped me. I told them that their customer service was severely lacking, and was told that they were "busy" and apologized, but I know that's not the case because there are a million posts out there about the exact same thing with them. Thier products have always been good and they have a good reputation because of it, but I simply won't use a company that puts such little emphasis on customer service.

I always use Crane as well, their stuff has been perfect right along.

Called Crane Cams. Got a recommendation. Tryed to find it on Summit and Jegs but couldn't. Looked up the same specks in a comp cam and found it. Feel kinda bad, but it was in stock at Summit in Arlington so went and picked it up. Xe 268 H.

As far as I can tell this is a flat tappet cam. Aren't you building a roller motor?
Offline
No roller. Original motor.

Tryed to drop the 331 into the Mustang today. Wrong flex plate. I ordered a balanced assembly. So now have to have the new flexplate matched to the old one.

You’re making great progress Steve. It seems like there’s alway something that pops up and gets in the way!!

A Reverend of a small church in Mammoth, decided after 15 years to take up a church in Houston to be closer to family and get outta the snow ... he told me that his first year back there, it snowed!
He's a Reverend, so can't tell fibs.

Snow is a real problem for us in the don't WORK clan. COLD is another 4 letter word and goes in tandem with SNOW. It would be nice to get above 32F one of these days.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
