Fired up the 331 today. Within about a minute broke the power steering belt. Picked up a new one and during install noticed that the water pump pulley is rubbing the balancer pulley. Everything is the same except the water pump.nice aluminum high flow. Probably made in China.

Man, that sucks. Reverse rotation or standard?
Offline
Standard.

That water pump did not make the pulley larger! Are the pulleys a matched set that were in use together previously?
Offline
Wait a minute. A high flow water pump has a larger impeller, which means the pump shaft was probably moved downward to fit the larger impeller within the constraints all around. Lowering the water pump shaft reduces the clearance.
If the pulley interference is not too bad the outer edge can be turned down 20-30 thousands for clearance.
If a smaller water pump pulley is installed that will speed up the water pump even more.

Michael Morrow is going to turn the pulley down for me.

Shaved. 040 off water pump pulley. Seems to fit ok now.

Yes MS everything is the same except the water pump.

I have never heard of a water pump that relocates the shaft downward.
What brand pump?
Offline
Supplyed by the customer. Not sure of the brand. Visual was a perfect match. Had Michael turn down the pulley. 040 today now all seems good.

In the interests of science: what is the diameter of the pump pulley after trimming?
Offline
Realistically, a water pump could probably be repositioned on the timing cover 0.040” by loosening all the bolts and moving it up a little. Probably enough slop in the bolt holes.
Offline
True, but then you wouldn't have the fun of turning down a water pump pulley on a lathe!
Offline
Did the pulley have a double wall thickness at the OD?
Offline
Yes the pulley was thicker on the outer lip.

I used to slot the holes on the old MG water pumps so my larger pulley(slowed down the pump) would fit and made the slots log enough to tension the belt without an idler. I had eliminated the generator and ran on the battery. Race car duty!
