Putting new 9” housing and axles in the 66

New Currie housing and axles going in.  Can’t decide whether to replace the 3.70 gear set with 3.50.   Has 427 stroker and TKO600.

Cruises 70 mph at about 2,200 with the 3.70’s.

Opinions?

Re: Putting new 9” housing and axles in the 66

I like the 3:55.  Runs around 2150 with the .67 OD of the AOD trans.  You should expect around 100 RPM less from were it is now going to a 3.55.  What's the torque curve on the engine?  That will give a clue as to where it might be happiest on a steady cruise.

Re: Putting new 9” housing and axles in the 66

With a 2.87 first gear I suspect that 3.50 gears won't be an issue in slow traffic.  I doubt you'll see any improvement in economy but it will probably be a little quieter at speed.  In first gear you'll get better burnouts because you'll be spinning the tires faster with the 3.50's

Re: Putting new 9” housing and axles in the 66

2000 rpm @ ~65 is a lot quieter than 2200.  I like it better.  My wife does too.

Re: Putting new 9” housing and axles in the 66

3.50 will make first a fraction more usable
Didn't you already have a custom housing? Or are ya still tryin ta fix the noise?.

Trying to get rid of harmonic vibration/noise that appears at 75mph.  Been chasing it since 1992 when previous housing was installed.

With the torque of the 427, 3.50 would be my choice.
Otherwise first will be kinda useless.

I’m sure you’ll still be able to leave your signature😎
Your shop looks great.👍🏼👍🏼

Re: Putting new 9” housing and axles in the 66

With the massive torque of the 427 and the "mild girlie camshaft"....the 3.50:1 gear  will  deliver .......period.
2000RPM @70 MPH  you'll still be able to pass most anything....and not even cut in the secondaries!

Re: Putting new 9” housing and axles in the 66

I like the 3.50 in mine. It makes 5th gear usable from 45 on up.

Re: Putting new 9” housing and axles in the 66

Has anyone tried the new US GEAR STEALTH SERIES gears?  Supposedly special machining process to provide a really quiet gear.

You mean all gear makers don’t try to make their gears as quiet as possible? How would they ever get any repeat business?
